I had an incident the other day which compels
me to seek advice. I have several books in my
water closet and it has come to my attention that
they may, or may not, be sources of Fecal Coliform.
However, I must point out that one must delineate
between pre bowel movement reading and post
bowel movement reading. If one reads only before
the BM, then the book should be free of all contagion.
Is this not true?

Not true. You can have fecal coliform on your hands at anytime if you don't wash your hands frequently. Fecal coliforms are found almost anywhere people would put their hands. Just wash your hands after going to the bathroom and don't touch your eyes or mouth, and you should be fine.

I've read before that fecal matter can disseminate in the air. For example, toothbrushes left exposed in the bathroom will undoubtedly have fecal matter forming on them.

My best suggestion: leave the reading material outside of the bathroom. I think flushing is what propels the airborne matter, so if you toss the magazine/book out of the bathroom before you flush, like I do, you should be good to go.

A toilet seat may do the job.

Down before flushing...

Do you ever watch the show "Myth Busters"?

They did a show on it to see what actually happens. They did it over one week and placed toothbrushes everywhere around the bathroom in the room outside of the bathroom, and even in their kitchen a couple of rooms away. They had ones they used everyday and ones they didn't use but just left there, some covered, some uncovered.

No matter where they put the toothbrushes, used or unused, covered or uncovered, every single one them tested positive for fecal matter. Even the ones they put in the kitchen a couple of rooms away. So no matter what you do it eventually ends up everywhere.

Don't worry about it, we've all been living with it for years without knowing about it and we're all still here. You can't escape it!

I once met a doc who lived in Telluride. He was a fan of walking around naked in the mountains, wearing only his Keds. It was his firm conviction that people should eat a spoonful of dirt every day.

I have to say I agree with him.
