koh tao is a pretty small place and i would assume they are all pretty competitive. i snorkelled and it was very good and dirt cheap ... around 20,000 won for a half day trip around the island. great visibility and lots of fish. lunch included. |

PS -- you might be better off just snorkelling because the water is pretty shallow -- at least that's what a tourist told me who was paying mad cash to dive. |

the diving in ko tao is very over rated. i'd give it a 2/5. the reefs are not particularly rich with coral or fish, the triggerfish are insane, you will probably be attacked at some point or other and there are way too many divers in the water at the same time - its very crowded. if you are going to do a course you';; probably end up in a group of 8 which is not so good...
how about trying out the west coast of thailand? the reefs were not badly affected by the tsunami - certainly still better than what you get at ko tao. also, the east coast of thailand is in monsoon.
i could recommend ko lanta on the west coast... close to some great sites - especially hin daeng and hin muang. think about checking it out... it's manta season. lanta divers is good. google it.
if you are still going to ko tao, i cannot really recommend any partictular company but most diveshops have websites... i'd go for a smaller shop.
let me know what you decide... |

I've heard Koh Tao has certain sites with pretty regular whale shark sightings at the right time of year. For me that by itself would make it all worthwhile. |

I went in August and stayed here:
http://www.nangyuan.com/
its three tiny islands next to Koh Tao and you stay on one of the islands. They are private so the only people styaing on the island are divers, although they do get alot of day visitors (which adds to the scenery!!) Its pretty basic, a little more expensive than some of the others I think, but really beautiful. Plus all your closed dives you do off one of the beaches and there is alot to see really close. I had an awesome time, although if you want night life this is not your best choice!!!
Have a great trip.

My coworker is heading there tomorrow to teach re-breather classes for the next month. I forgot to ask for which outfit.
BTW he was on a dock somewhere near Phuket (phi phi? Racha Yai?) when the tsunami hit last year. He and is girlfriend were 2 of 7 survivors out of 22 people waiting for the dive boat to pull up to the dock that day. |
