Hey,
What do you guys think about people who submit their contracts for evaluation here on Dave's?
Is it a good way to go about making your job decision?
Is an internet board even a reliable source to base an employment decision on?
Just curious here.
I find that more than not, newbies who post contracts get a fair portion of relevant advice from here but also get some completely off the charts contract dissection by some old time residents of the board. It seems that many of us forgot that coming to work here as a newbie rarely means having all your ducks in a row and that every contract you see will, if you scrutinize it long enough show flaws.
It is quite useful to provided informed advice to newbies about contracts. It is in fact a good service being offered to them. However, we have to remember not to judge a contract as if it concerned us directly. By that I mean that we have to remember that we are (some of us) long termers who have different views, experiences and needs when it comes to a work contract.
For example, telling a newbie with no experience that every contract he shows is pure crap just because the salary offered would not match our profile as experienced teachers is a bit odd no? |

I think they are smart to do it.
Even if one of use were to try to screw them over...someone else would set things straight.
It's probably the best way to get help from someone with more experience. |

I think its good for a heads up. Many of the people coming here are fresh out of uni and have little or no knowledge of contracts.
Some people dont seem to enjoy my candor when I critique contracts but I say what I feel.
I also feel that there are a few too many people here that just go with the flow and advise others to do the same....and then it comes back to bite people in the butt! |

It would strike me as pretty vital really, as a first timer. For spotting real lemons and danger spots. There are enough people here to balance out extremists. |

i wish i had done that when i came. although, to be honest, when i first read this board, before i came to korea, i thought a lot of you were ethnocentric bastards. now i know it's just that korea is a really messed up place. and now i sound ethnocentric... |

You aren't even in Korea anymore. Why do you care? Hagwons are shady as all get out. Full stop. |

I think for hawgwon's it isn't really a problem, but for more professional jobs, the employer might want to keep the terms and conditions of their contract confidential. |

If I knew a newbie with contract questions I'd tell them to ask Grotto to go over it. In fact I have. Homer's right that we shouldn't be crapping all over a contract just because it says 1.9 and everything else looks good. But there are so many shady contracts and Koreans often don't understand what they say and what the law actually is. All in all it's a very good idea. |

For someone who is interested in working in Korea shortly. If someone happens to post a contract it gives me a chance to see what i'm in for in terms of conditions and so forth. In addition with everyone's input on them it also gives me a chance what not to accept in the given circumstances.
Like the old saying, "Smoke 'em if you got 'em", "post 'em if you got 'em". |

If a boss wanted to keep the contract a secret in Korea, I would know there was something very wrong. Many of the big franchise schools have a clause in them that says the contract is confidential. |
