I have a student who is in middle school and interested in science fiction. He has a good general ability but the coursebooks are boring him, I thought that some enjoyable extracurricular reading would help improve his grammar... without seeming like homework.

Any suggestions?

I think Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is pretty much the definitive adolescent sci-fi novel. As with any sci-fi, there's going to be some difficult vocabulary, but the story should grab him straight away.

There were some collections I read when I was young...maybe edited by Asimov? I think they were called Young Aliens, Young Mutants, and maybe Young Something-or-other. Short stories in manageable chunks, but really quality writing.

I second the recommendation of Asimov's short stories. Simple vocab and intriguing ideas.
