Schools to Give Menstrual Leave From March
All Korean schools will introduce menstrual leave in March, allowing female students to take a day off during their period.... The rule does not apply to teachers.

The ministry said the move would protect the human rights of female students. Those taking the days off will not be penalized on their attendance records, and tests given on days they are absent will be scored at 80 to 100 percent of the score on the most recent tests they took.

It already exists for teachers. Check the Labour Code.
Chapter V, Article 71: "An employer shall allow a female worker one day's menstruation leave with pay per month." |

Hm? Menstrual leave for female _employees_ has been on the law books in Korea since ever. Even in the 1950s I understand that Korean labour law could be described as quite progress in its day. (Progressive for PR purposes vis-a-vis the worker's paradise to the north, though largely unenforced)
Wait, you were saying something else, weren't you? Oh well, never mind then.

What? New Zealand schoolgirls and female employees don't get menstrual days off? How unprogressive and old-fashioned of you. And with a lady prime minister as well! |

| I've never seen anyone actually take time off for their period. I wonder if anyone regularly takes advantage of the leave. Can you imagine? "Hey, where's periwinkle today?" "Oh, she's on the rag again." "Huh. I thought she had a major presentation. Next time we'll get a guy to do it." Not something I would ever take advantage of- quick way to get my contract cancelled. |

So you'd think. I've asked GFs and they say it's not that big a deal. They will take that day off if they need or want to. I'd've thought simple embarassment would be a more common reason for reluctance to claim the time off than your "major presentation" hypothetical. In offices where I've work, the Korean women there were so well-dressed, so modelesque, so immaculate that you really couldn't conceive of one of them even belching or farting like us mere mortals, let alone announcing to their male boss (and he to her male co-workers) that she had to take time off to go menstruate. But apparently that's not so. Or else everyone has lied to me, which I don't think is the case.

In my experience, Korean girls are a little more open about their menstrual cycle. A girl I barely knew once told me she couldn't drink because she was on her period.
And every month my girlfriend is bedridden for a few days because of her period. |

I doubt this will make much difference - I'm sure my students' parents or the dorm monitor will just send them to school anyways. The ones in the dorm rooms who tell me they all get on the same cycle as their roommates might fill up the infimatory rather quickly if they're all allowed a day off on the same day.

I think the same tyranical abuse is in place in Canada and the US Jong!
Damn...women being oppressed by a dictatorial regime that does not allow them menstrual leave...any links on that RR and how that relates to our salaries as teachers in Korea? |

Yet, if the same girl was shot, the boss would expect her to finish the shift after having the bullet removed.
Not to say that cramping and all that other crap women go through is a laughing matter, I just find it very odd that this qualifies for PAID time off, when people who have broken limbs or severe influenza are not permitted unpaid time off (depending on your boss to some degree I'm sure). |
