Ok, I am not one to pick on a student's English skill, but this just made us all laugh. My colleague got this from his student via e-mail, we THINK requesting something...

To Rechad professor..Me information physical subject 2 grade is (Name, student number). It listened to a semester period lecture and became the many help. Professor study it will lead and when meeting the foreign nation person, in small quantity is but it will take and and it becomes tense, there will be a possibility of sharing a fasciatin kkes it is same. It is different it knows op, the b+ came out with 89 pieces which see a semester score but. the depending on broad way, the record which it does eagerly but comes out with expectation over and reappraisal the printed style of writing which when it does as a favor it is bad, well! it knows but buy understanding. I with the all service in! the reserve which goes decreasing the effect where the record is many in employment think the military force. When once it reappraises again from and the grading mistake which it will not know maybe is not ten, the confirmation which probably does not have a different error it does as a favor, it wishes. Busy place directness it searches for and from all speech it cannot give the point it is sorry. Like that vacation it will send well and 2 semester time it will see. Good hour send.

Ok, so IF this student is asking to bump his (we assume) 89% to a 90%, would you? Would it be deserved? For what reason, skills or humour?

Shoosh,

Ryst

I second this, but not out of vindictiveness. The student just needs to learn how useless online translators are, so, if you retranslate his message into Korean, and explain that, and he gets it, he might learn his lesson.

Ok guys,

Sorry, I guess I shoulda been more transparent....

First off, this ain't my student, but a colleague's...he printed out a copy for me so that I may have something to chuckle about (if I were that kinda edumakater).

Secondly, I have been at this game (at this uni) for 5 years now, and know the bs that flies...furthermore, I never change grades, as I quadruple check for mistakes and have students come in and verify that I've not made any.

This was to be a hypothetical grade boost (if that is the student's intention), you know, for the heck of it....or for humour...whatever.

Nothing too serious, I just thought this was a 'typical' student e-mail.. kinda a heads up for others who may have had similar messages, and just curious to what others would do.

thanks for the input

Shoosh,

Ryst

Guess translation is still a viable career. The student couldn't have done any worse trying to write it in English. The polite part, salutations and wishing the teacher a good vacation, are easy. The main point is tricky. My guess is this is a male student and the difference between the 89 and 90 might make the difference between whether he stays in reseverves or gets sent into the regular military. (???) The "grading mistake" sounds rough to a teacher's ears but I think it's mitigated by the following sentences...something to the effect that the instructor might well not find anything to change but the consideration of the student's situation would be greatly appreciated. But maybe I'm way off here...at least it's obvious the tone is polite and friendly.

Precision in grading, equal treatment, and rewards based on performance are needed. But even in a silly bablefish note like this one, somebody is trying to communicate something and it might have more relevance than a single percentage point. Your friend had this student for a sememster, but the kid isn't sure enough of his(?) abilities to write out a note that might have mistakes, and hence tries solve the problem with a computer program. At least an effort was made, there's no need to rub the his nose in it.

Or how about William S. Burroughs? Looks like classic cut-up to me. We might all be badly mistaken about this young fellow's linguistic prowess.

Thanks for the posting, it brought a much needed belly laugh into the day.

Apologies to Weatherman for completely screwing up that quotation and attributing words to him that weren't his. I think I'll quit while I'm ahead with this quotation feature, or is there a user's tutorial out there?

I would simply ask him why he wants me to raise the grade, and then invite him in to do a test.

Cheers,
