My kid sis wants a computer but she's on an extremely tight budget. Help me figure out what the bare minimums she can get away with are, for the moment- with options to upgrade later on.
All she really wants to do is surf the net, edit some documents, edit her photos a bit, and maybe download some music once in a while.
Thanks a bunch guys |

You're no computer newbie -- any answer you have will be as good as any you get here.
But, for my two cents, forget getting something to upgrade. Just buy something around 1Ghz with 512 megs and think of it as disposible. |

That's what I'd say, but she's currently trying to edit pics on a computer that's older than some of my students- she has trouble getting her head aournd the concept of disposable electronics.
Maybe I should just buy a cheap laptop from the buy and sell forum and ship it off to her? |

Yeah. If I could edit with Photoshop 7 with my old 1Ghz coppermine she could do it with most of the laptops I see posted here.
But, if you're shipping it home I might suggest that you peruse ebay. They'll have a bigger, better selection and shipping will be cheaper. |

Assuming the photos aren't really huge, that could be done with ease on any old machine - a PIII500 no problem.
It's the possibility to upgrade that could be tricky - will you be able to track down a compatible CPU or graphics card for an older board when the time comes? |
