I need help planning my 2 week trip to Cambodia in February. I will fly into Phnom Penh and then...
What's a good hotel in Phnom Penh? How can I get there from the airport? How many days will I need to explore Phnom Pehn? Of course we will do Angkor. Should I take the boat, bus or fly to Siem Reap? Where should we stay? I'm not a novice traveler, so I'd like to avoid the "Khao San Road" crowd. I'll be going with the K-gf and our budget will be $75-$100 a day, not including Angkor's fees. Can anyone recommend a good hotel/travel guide in Siem Reap? Are there any other "must see" places in Cambodia?
Thanks so much for your help! |

$75-100 a day should be more than enough for a fairly nice hotel, and fun/interesting activities options (which your hotel will tell you all about).
-Hardly romantic for you and your girlfriend, but I reccomend a visit to one of the sites from the days of the Khmer rouge- either Tuol Sleng or one of the mass graveyards. Brings home the history for you, and puts in perspective the current situation of this warm and friendly country.
Angkhor is truly amazing, you will love it....enjoy! |

In Cambodia? Have you actually been there? A third of that, and you'll be living like a king there.
Cambodia is one of my favourite countries, so to the OP, go! |

My husband and I loved Cambodia. If you are going to Siem Reap, I would HIGHLY recommend our driver. He was so friendly and kind, easy-going, and knew so much about the temples and history of Cambodia. Some people hire both a driver and a tour guide, but with Mr. Savy, you wouldn't have to. At each temple, he can tell you about its construction and the history, which is very interesting. I think we really lucked out! Here's his e-mail address:

His rates are about $25/day, which is spot-on for the going rates. I can't say enough about him. He made our trip fantastic! |

Thanks for the replies. justagirl- this might be a dumb question but was Mr. Savy your guide for Angkor Wat? I imagine he picked you up at your hotel.
Can you reccomend a hotel in Siem Reap? I agree, a great guide makes for a great trip! I will definitely hire Mr. Savy. I love saying his name already! |

He's certainly savvy, too. Yes, he was our guide for Ankor Wat. He picked us up at the airport. I wish I could remember the guesthouse/hotel we stayed at in Angkor. It was $12/night and included a private bath and a/c. It was a smaller room, but very clean and quiet. Darn...I can see it in my mind, but can't remember the name at all. I think most of them are quite nice. We actually stayed in 2 different ones. The first one was off the main road and down a dirt road a bit, and it was actually more expensive than the one on the main road. I wish I could remember...even went to some Siem Reap websites to try to refresh my memory, but nothing looked familiar. I think no matter where you stay, it will be cheap and nice.
For a great gift, go to the local market area and pick up some of the silk bedspreads (we saw them on our beds at the guesthouses and loved them). They're lightweight, beautiful color choices and wonderful designs. I think they run around $10-14 each for a queen size. I wish we had gotten more of them for family/friends. They're definitely one of the best souvineers we bought in Cambodia. |

You're super justagirl! I'll have Mr. Savy pick us up at the airport and I'm sure he'll be able to show us somewhere nice to stay. And thanks for the tip on the bedspreads. Silky dreams....nice! |
