Short question for the technical people out there. Are the DVD players in Korea region-free? As a bit of a movie junkie I have a region-free player that I bought in Thailand, but it's kaput and I wonder if I can buy another one in Korea (I'll be there next month). I have DVDs from all regions, including NTSC and PAL DVDs, from Europe, the US, Asia...

Also, is there any problem with PAL/NTSC conversion on the TVs? I don't remember it being a problem last time I was in K, but just like to doublecheck.

Anyone knows, let me know.

Cheers

I know someone who bought a region free dvd player here. But I think you have to be sure to ask specifically for one. Shouldn't be too big of a problem if you just head to the local HiMart.
Don't know the answer to your second question.

Get the Philips DVP-320. I bought mine about 2 years ago, and it was 150,000 won at the time. The cool thing is that there's a special hack you can use to make it region free. There have been a couple of threads about it here. Do a quick search here and you'll find the code.

I've got one I bought from another teacher who was leaving and he did the same thing. Searched the internet and found a code that he punched in and bingo, region free. Very Happy

The brand name of the one I've got is "Plenio". cost me 50,000 won.

Carrefour occasionally stocks a made-in-China special that's region free and all English (no having to decipher the remote). Think I paid W68,000 for mine.

I have a region free DVD player that I bought in Seoul. It was 140,000 and you just have to change the region to whatever the region on the DVD is. No cracks needed. It is awesome! It is made by LOTTE and is also plays every kind of media file you can get off a computer whether it be avi., MPEG1,2,3,4, MOV., blah, blah, blah, and you can look at picture files and make a slideshow as well, and it will use DVD"s or CD's.

It's probably my best purchase I have made and you can't beat the price. Also, you can change the menu to 8 different languages and the remote is in English.

Oh yeah, there is also no problem with the PAL/NTSC conversion, it does it all by itself.

I have also had files that would work on my computer, but I put them on a disc and the DVD player played them. It was able to encode or decode...whatever... all by itself.

Even better than a DVD player is a divx player. I think they retail, currently, for about 70,000 won. It plays DVDs with varying region codes, and you can also use CDs, CD-R, DVD-R, mp3, Kodak picture CDs, and VCDs. So, you can watch burnt movies or rent DVDs here, as well as watch the ones you already own. Quite a cool little machine.

I paid 120,000 won for a great player from YesAsia.com. Works great & plays everything I've put in it so far.

OK, so sounds like I can either find a region-free or one I can use a hack on. The hacks eliminate region coding, but would it make it able to play PAL DVDs?

Thanks.

Yes, get a china model like Silady.

The mainstream Korean brands: LG, Samsung, Daewoo, etc., are not region free.

Not all region-free players are created the same. Sure, you can get a cheap 50,000 won player but if you have an HDTV, you'll see that you get what you pay for.

Philips 642

Other Philips models probably have a remote hack and can do PAL and NTSC.

'Ethnic' brand from china is all-region. i think the symbol on the box for an all region player is a globe with no number.
