Hey,
i'm new at this. I just arrived in Korea two days ago and I will start on Tuesday. I am at Seongnam English Town and i'm in the class about fast food. I am by myself and kind of scared because i've never taught before like, ever.
So! the class room is in made like a fast food joint. There is a menu with Burger King items like it says 1-Whopper and studd like that. On the sides are ice cream things like Dairy Queen.
They have fake food on the counter. I asked for a fake register and some more fake food because i'll have 10 kids at a time.
So all i've come up with so far is asking about what is Burger king and what do they eat there kinda spend 5 minutes on that (does that even take 5 minutes?"
Then go on the vocubulary like just trying to perfect the pronouciation of the words. that might be another 5
Then i'll passout 2 dialogues and go over that a bit I guess that's another 5. So then there's the actual acting out like i'd have one student be the cashier and the other student order and they can't use the paper. Except the cahier i'll make a price list for her so when they order she can say the correct price. All the prices are above the person'sw head and it sticks out a bit so there's no way the cashier will see it.
So anyways that should be what? 10 minutes
? so that's only 20 minutes of work in a 50-60 minute class i'm dying here cause I don't know what to do. I guess I can spend 5 minutes learning names. um yeah that's actually a good idea. um wait. Ok I just thought mayube they can work on the dialougue in groups of 2 before I have one person as the cashier and 2 customers you know. because that's in front of the whole class and they may have more confidence if they do it two by two first. But then how long would that take like 3 to 4 minutes? hmm maybe 5 so they can they can know it really well. i'm not sure how long 5 minutes is in the class room anymore.
Ok so does anyone have any ideas besides the role play and vocabulary cause that's about all I have. |

Don't sweat it, this sounds like a fun little class!
Do you have any money from home? Realia always goes down real well in my classes.
First up introduce the topic, Hangman is a good way of doing it. (if it says it in the book though then that might be a bit easy).
Then give them either:
pictures and words for them to match up (a lot of the english is Koreanised hamburger in korean is hamburger) for things like whoppers ask the kids what the difference between a hamburger and a whopper is. Ellicit the word big, and explain that "whopper" is another word for big. How old are the kids? Depending on their ages you might choose to focus on the foods (milkshake, burgers, chicken strips, nuggets, fries) or if they are a bit older then you might look at adjectives instead (fresh lettuce, juicy burgers, tasty, spicy chicken, etc. etc.) don't GIVE them the words, have them brainstorm in pairs. Depending on your teaching outlook either reward with praise or give points to the contributors and hand out small candy at the end (this always works so well for me I go for the 900w packet of candy).
On to the dialogue. Do they have a hard copy in their books? If so have them look at it for perhaps 5 minutes. While that is happening hand out a sheet of dialogue with incorrect sentences on them. Have them close their books and then work through the sheet together. To get the "points" they must then correct a sentence and write it on the board. Scale the corrections on the ability of the students.
When they finish that task I'd drill the work you've covered so far.
Then on to the fun part. The fact you have a register is awesome, and a good sign that school your in is cool First up have the most confident student do it with you act it out, the more you get into it the better the response with you get from the kids.
Then have them practice in pairs. After they have it down turn it into a game. One team must perform the skit, asking for the various foods. They then have to calculate how much the order would cost. The first group calling out the correct price wins a point. For this game I'd have pairs doing it (5 pairs).
If you have time at the end fall back on the following
crossword covering the vocab of the day
designing their own fast food from a choice of ingredients (on paper not in reality) give them a list of ingredients have them draw the new sandwich and describe it using the adjectives mentioned earlier.
Don't fret, you'll be a very popular addition to the lesson, even if you finish the class in the first 15 minutes you'll have loads of fun just talking to your kids about your country and where you lived etc. bring photos from home.
Good Luck. Once you get into it you'll find you have more material than you realised. |

oh that last one was excellent! I think i'll try that one.
Some of the stuff won't work the WAY you said it but it will work in a different way. Like the matching game won't work because there's a menu above us and so all the answers are right there.
Hangman is definatly not possible. There is no blackboard or any board whatsoever. Just think of it as having class at McDonalds and you have the shape of my classroom.
I think they have books. I don't know. Like we ask is there a teaching manual and they said there is but they don't want us to follow it they want us to make up our on stuff. So I made up the dialogue myself. I need a printer so I can hand it out to the class. I will definatelyt have them go over it in pairs first and walk around to help them if needed.
oh! all the kids are 5th or 6th grade and they'll be split up into groups of Beginner/intermediate/advanced.
arg i'm so tired now I think i'll think about this tomorrow night. Tomorrow during the day I have 2 hours of nothing to fill cause there are no classes but there's an hour of homeroom and an hour of "get to yknow you time" and i'm like. Isn't that the same thing?!
*sigh*
thank for the sugesstions that last one especially was great! |

Wait till next week when you have to think of something totally new again. I hate those theme rooms...they really blow. I would like to see the boss in there for a month doing it. Every student would quit and the boss would never be able to pull it off. Those theme rooms are little deaths over a long time. |

You might also divide the kids into groups and have each group try to come up with a mascot (like Ronald McDonald). They can draw the character and perhaps suggest a few tag lines for it to say: "Yummy burgers, they're the best, Burger King beats all the rest!" OK, hopefully they can do better. You could offer a small reward to the winning entry.
Good luck! |
