http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2006/01/16/afghanistan-attack-060116.html

A medic applied a bandage to his own leg and then tried to help his comrades.. A diplomat died and the rest are in Germany being treated by the Americans. The explosion rocked the jeep into a row of shops.. crazy stuff.. My old regiment will be heading over there soon..

Ass. Death of an ally = funny? Not only that but the op said he'll be heading over there. I think you'd better apologize.

For every human in Sudan that gets killed, I spend one day in mourning. I hope that you ubernationalist Canadians see fit to do the same.

Normally I'd be offended, and so I am, but let's face it: Crap threads like Newbie's thread on this same subject pretty much engender these sorts of responses. We reap what we sow on the board as in the real world.

Well, I'm certainly no ubernationalist Canadian (I'm seriously considering changing my citizenship sometime down the road) but that's a good point to remember.

I think the best way to change things for the better for people like us is to focus on basics like literacy, food, shelter, and so on. I've seen stories of people in poor parts of Africa where babies have gotten AIDS from men who had heard from their friends that sleeping with a baby would cure it. Things like that that look so obvious to us should be given first priority. I see 30-50% of the people in Sudan are illiterate. Unfortunately I don't know what I can do personally to make Sudanese literate, but I suspect that putting my effort into the promotion of an IAL will have a beneficial effect on the world as a whole, eventually.

Edit: 53.9% are illiterate.

Try replacing 'Canadian' with a few other words and see if it still holds up. One whole Jew? One whole New Yorker? One whole English teacher? Feel any different?

I don't know about an irony bypass but I have a rule that I never say anything on current events that I suspect could offend someone in a personal way. If someone knows someone personally who is involved in something dangerous or tragic I avoid offending them even if it would help me make a point. You'll recall the thread last week on the accident with the miners and how one poster tried to use it to talk about over-reliance on God and calling things miracles except that it later turned out to be just the opposite. Whether there was a point to be made there or not didn't matter because it was the wrong time and place to say it.

Mith, you don't belong on this board.

That's a compliment to you and a shame for most of the rest of us.
