I would add Tim Roth and Gary Oldman to my list too. They are damn good actors. Steve Buscemi made my list as I always think of him as one of the best actors alive. |

I think Richard Dreyfuss is also a great actor with many film credits and an Oscar win for the 70s flick shown in the poster below:
I haven't seen many of his films - at least in their entirety - but I really liked his work in Mr. Holland's Opus - which, though schmaltzy at the end, is a good inspirational movie for teachers... |

For me those 3 guys seem to be able to click well with their own character portrayals, and always do well as supporting actors....
Personal Fav movies with these 3 would be:
Oldman - Leon* (aka..The Professional) / True Romance
(*I see B.Pitts 12 monkeys character borrowing manneurisms a bit?)
Roth - Deceiver...(w/ now late Chris Penn) / Resevoir Dogs
Buscemi - Tree's Lounge / Resevoir Dogs
Anything Tarantino has been involved with - Roth or Buscemi seem to stand out for me....heck, Even Roth as Ted the Bell hop in Four Rooms...
ConAir was pretty terrible, but Buscemi did well....

How about disappointments by some of your favorites....? Which movie do you wish your favorite never took up the role for? |

| I always thought Bob Saget (from Full House) was great. He put so much emotion into that show and practically redefined the culture of the time. Heartfelt performances, biting wit and intensity you wouldn't believe. |

when it comes to versatility, i'm gonna second a few that have already been mentioned countless times:
johnny depp, ed norton, kevin spacey, and tim robbins... man tim robbins was good and creepy in war of the worlds.
when i talk about my favorite actors, i usually judge them by the fact that even though you're watching someone famous, you forget who they are. doesn't matter how famous or commerical of an actor they are. for this reason, although tom cruise is a good actor, i feel like every time i watch one of his movies i'm watching tom cruise playing tom cruise playing a character. on the other hand, when it comes to brad pitt, he's just as commercial as tom cruise, but when he takes on different roles, he really becomes that person (for example 12 monkeys and snatch).
also, someone who hasn't been mentioned but i've been watching him since the green mile: sam rockwell. he's quite the actor. he usually chooses quirky roles and has been convincing in every movie i've seen of his... his performance in hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy was hilarious, and he's just as good playing a creepy psychotic molester/murderer (the green mile). oh and i can't forget to mention the fact that his first role must've been an after school special called "over the limit" (did anyone else ever see it in their driver's ed class?) he's a kid who drinks and drives and ends up killing a person. as punishment, he has to write a check for some obscenely small amout of money for the dead person's family something like every day for the rest of his lifet. classic cinema.
finally, someone mentioned the likes of robin williams, steve martin, and jim carrey as funny men-turned-serious. i think they're all fine choices, but i'm surprised that with the indie/dramatic roles bill murray has taken these days no one has mentioned him. i've gained a lot of respect for him recently, just figured i'd throw his name out there. |

| Someone's already mentioned Bill Murray... I always liked him since Ghostbusters, and he started showing more depth, I think, in Scrooged. One of my favorite movies is Groundhog's Day... Kingspin was also weirdly interesting and funny. I saw Rushmore (his performance was very understated) but I've missed most of his "semi-serious" roles since then, including Lost In Translation and Broken Flowers... |

Typically Italian; sitting on the fence. 
For me it's De Niro, without a doubt. Watch Raging Bull for the greatest example of character acting ever. If you get the special features on DVD, there's an interview with the real Jake La Motta and you'll swear that he's doing an impression of De Niro playing him in the film -it's that surreal.
Pacino's great (at his best in The Godfather Part II) but I agree that he's parodied himself in recent years with over-acting -most noteably in Devil's Advocate but also, unfortunately, in Heat, which was otherwise a fantastic movie.
Of the younger generation, Edward Norton is good, but Johnny Depp is brilliant. His choice of roles challenges his acting skills in every film, yet he always pulls it off. I've got more respect for Di Caprio these days but he's simply not in the same league. Neither is Brad Pitt who was laughable in Troy and should stick to looking cool in a suit.
As an Englishman, I've always been a fan of Albert Finney who, despite not living up to his potential when he arrived on the the big stage in the sixties, certainly deserved an Oscar for Erin Brokovich.
A special mention must go to one of my high school alumni; a certain Sir Ian McKellen (well before my time) who is rightly recognised as one of the all-time greats.
I haven't mentioned any actresses yet. I've been in love with Natalie Portman ever since Leon (which was okay because I was about thirteen at the time) but she's yet to perform to the same level as an adult. Dame Judi Dench exudes class whenever she's on screen. Very few others come to mind.
I'm sure I've missed many great contemparary actors -I'll post again if I've missed an obvious one.
By the way, I've never been a big fan of Jack Nicholson. The most over-rated actor (winning about five Oscars by playing the same role -which he admittedly does very well, playing himself). |

There are a lot of great picks here...very interesting post...for me anyway....
I agree with Geoffry Rush in Quills....which reminds me of Joaquin Pheonix...bringing me to Clay Pigeons and U-Turn...so then Billy Bob Thorton and SlingBlade/ A Simple Plan...to Bill Paxton Aliens/Tombstone...
to Val Kilmer and Heat/Mind Hunters...to Christian Slater and Pump up the Volume/Very Bad Things/Murder in the 1st/Interview with a Vampire....errrrrrrrrrkkkk....
