My passport went missing sometime last week. I have to go to the Canadian Embassy to apply for a new one. What will happen with my E-2 visa? I am planning to renew my contract in March. I still have my alien registration card but I will probably have a new passport (if mine doesn't turn up by Tuesday). Has this happened to anyone here? Tell me about it.

It hasn't happened to me, but be prepared to make a little trip to Japan when you're finished with the Canadian beauracracy. Wink

Your visa will still be valid. Though you have to go to immigration and tell them you have a new passport. I renewed at my current school last March. They only extended my ARC until April as that was when my passport was expiring.

I got a new passport from the embassy and went to immigration with it. To my surprise they didn't stamp anything into it, only extended my ARC to the end of my current contract.

Since then I have been back to immigration to get a re-entry stamp in my passport and there have been no problems.

I think once you are in the system and have an ARC, everything should be fine.

Exactly. I mean, isn't it obvious? The 'visa' in your passport is just a stamp to serve as proof you have it whenever you travel in and out of the country. It's not as if they'll throw you out of the country because your passport went missing. They aren't crazy, you know. Call your Immigration office today to notify them of this. Someone might try to get an alien registration card by using your old passport.

In my case, my passport was about to expire and I had to get a new one.
I was told to keep the old one, after it was punched with holes, and use the
new one along with my ARC when clearing Immigration. In the meantime,
I wasn't required to notify Immigration of the new passport. With lost or
stolen passports there may be that requirement. I can't recall whether the
airport official asked to see my old passport with the E2 visa stamp in it when I had left the country. Cool

Immigration won't care. When you extend your visa you simply show them your ARC, your new passport and other documents like new contract and hakwons registration, pay the fee and it is all done. NO worries.

The problem comes when you go to the CANADIAN embassy. The workers there are a bunch of Korean DUMBASSES who think their shit don't stink. You won't see any Canadians who work there.

They WILL hassle you about the police report for the lost/stolen passport, and then make your life miserable when you don't have one. They will continue this process as you apply for your new passport.

Note to the department of foreign affairs here.... YOUR STAFF SUCK and are basically useless for anything beyond applying their makup during office hours.

OK...rant off and back to reality...

You will need a copy of the police report detailing your missing passport.

You will need an original birth certificate from Canada and other ID to support your claim to be Canadian. They also like to see a copy/scan of your old passport if you can dig one up.

You will have to pay about 155,000 won for your replacement.
You need one of their APPROVED passport photos. The photo shop in the basement of the embassy building is acceptable to them and only hoses you 20,000 won for 2 photos.

I think that just about covers it all.

Link for the embassy is here.

They don't give answers or advice or assistance by phone.
They usually don't know their own operating hours.
They are unable to give coherent directions to their location.

Other than that they usually aren't very helpful and are only open 1/2 days most of the time... and when they are open... there is no-one there to assist you cause they are busy playing with their makeup or fixing their finger nails and polish.

Given that Canada is one of the countries targeted for passport fraud, losing one is a big deal. It's pain in the ass when it happens to you, but if passport security wasn't so tight then visa-free travel would be a thing of the past.

In answer to the OP, you need to go to immigration with your new passport and report a change of number, they'll even transfer any re-entry permits for you.

Thanks, the re-entry thing is what I was most worried about. I have a police report and photo copies of my old passport but not my birth certificate. My mom is sending it. I went to the embassy and filled out all of the paperwork, but they didn't take any of it since I didn't have a birth certificate with me and I couldn't promise them that my mom could drive the 5 hours (each way) to the nearest passport office and wait in line to show them my birth certificate and explain the situation. You'd think that the people working at the Canadian embassy would understand how big Canada is! I was passed on to a telephone with a lady on it telling me the exact same thing that the lady behind the glass told me - basically that I need my birth certificate because they didn't know what to do if I didn't have one. I have to take a day off work and head back to Seoul when my birth certificate arrives.
