There seems to be lots of guys here who have experience in this so I will field the question and let experience speak. Last night one of my American friends and I were out pretty late after hitting a local Engish club. He met up with a local gal and we parted ways. I took a walk through the sidestreets to try to get back to downton. I ended up in a district that had a sign reading No one under 19. There were all these really hot, young girls standing around and a few adjumas trying to drag Korean men to the doors. The men were trying to resist. A few of the girls waved at me and 1 struck up a remedial conversation but most ignored me. Are these the infamous room salons that I have been hearing about? This was not the red light district. Also on my way back I passed several soju rooms that had red lights in them and women were sitting and drinking soju with Korean men. My main question is how do these places work? I know that your chances of getting action are better if you've got a Korean man with you (not to mention his translation skills), but how much do they generally cost and what do you get? I would really be interested in sitting around and hamming it up with some of those chicks while getting plowed on soju or whiskey if the price is right.

Nope... you found the Cheongyamni area, Gireum station (Mirari) or Sinyongsan. Many of those prostitutes are living in near slave-like conditions, and are all but "owned" by their boss, due to an indebtting (sp?) system. It's really sad.

Room salons are very expensive places where businessmen drop a million won to drink there, and another million to bonk a beautiful young woman, ranging in age from 19 to 23 or so, in a yagwon.

When you said, "I was not in a red light district," you were probably wrong. There are 'red light' areas all over the place. Room salons, juicy bars, hostess bars, miss/missy bars, licensed singing rooms, tea rooms, barber shops, etc, etc, etc. I think that the price depends on what you are looking for. If you're just looking to have a few drinks and have one of the ladies 'chat' with you and stroke your thigh, it'll probably cost you what you pay for your own drinks(somewhat overpriced) plus a few overpriced ones for the lady. Most likely, the area you were in was a popular deu-lahn-joo-juhm(licensed singing rooms + girls if desired) area...or maybe you were near a train station? As BBE said, a lot of them are required to entice the customers into something a little more expensive and the majority of what is paid goes to the 'Mama,' or what I refer to as 'The Ah-joo-mah Pimp'.

they were probably room salons or ....what do you call those? there was a whole street of them near dongdaemun ... little trashy hofs with red lights and you go in and sit at a table with ajummas and buy them expensive drinks and order anju. room salons for the blue collar set. avoid that scene as it is a waste of time and money and the women are older and not eligible to work in red light areas or anmas or even barber shops!

skip that.

go to hongdae and meet someone for free who doesn't make a living by selling her body.

or go to a real parlor and pay 150.

I find it hard to believe you just 'stumbled' upon one of the few "authorized" red light districts of Seoul. Those places are for straight up sex. Miari, for one, is set back from the street.

As others have said, there are plenty of little shops around Seoul, with names like "Top Cat", 'Heaven', "Star Butts", that hold maybe one or two private tables, where the man is supposed to buy lady drinks. Most don't even bother with foreigners (outside of Itaewon), and foreigners shouldn't bother with them, either. A waste of time, unless you are REALLY desperate to practice your Korean.

Don't believe everything you read, and don't paint such a broad picture. While what you say I'm sure has occurred, a lot of those women enter the business for different reasons. Some save up money and now have apartments in Kangnam.

Waaay back when I first lived in Seoul (really, it was another life)...

I "knew a guy" who had been to a view places in Cheonho. 45,000 for short time (15 minutes) 75,000 for long time (30 mintues)

These were in a back alley with a sign "no one under 19". Ajummas were in control, 3 or 4 women in a house with different rooms. Korean men walking aroung getting dragged in.

It was always quite fun. "My friend" and his friends always has some interesting altercations with over-protectve Korean men.

I'll try to break this down for you. I honestly don't go to these places and i've never paid for sex, but this is how i think it works. I'll leave it up to my fellow board members to correct me where i'm wrong.

Room Salons--Usually has a name like "Business Club" (Ͻ Ŭ) and a pricey one will be a big building with valets and a bunch of Equuses (Equi?) parked out front and no common bar area. Instead, as the name suggests, you got into a private room and sing a little karaoke, eat a little fruit, drink a little liquor, and get your handj*b or whatever you want. It's for groups of adjosshis.

Juicy Bar-- Usually has a name like Sexy Bar ( ) and from the outside may like any other bar. You've got to be able to read Korean to catch some, but others have may have drawings or stuff on the sign to clue you in. It's a full on bar stocked with girls who work there. (notice the table full of young girls by the entrance and notice the young girls hanging on every word some ugly old adjosshi is saying). You go there and a girl talks to you and you are required to buy her a drink. The catch: the drink is 20,000 won. Called a juicy bar because often the girl will sip some juice (she's got a drink a lot on a busy night, i guess)

Anma--Will have a big neon sign advertizing ȸ. You go in, get a massage and a happy ending. Or more. This is the one I know the least about. I think you can also get a normal massage with no happy ending. I think these are the places with the double barber poles in front of them. not sure.

Outright Wh*rehouses--Like the ones you see in hooker hill in itaewon. Girls sitting behind a glass window who will pop out and holler at you. Usually has a tiny bar, but it's just a waiting room before you go in and do the deed.

With Room Salons and Juicy Bars, you might be able to get the deed done on premise, but but usually you'll have to go to what is called (this is a term for the second place you visit in a night. For example, if you go bar hopping, the first place is , the second , the thrid and so on). In this case, will be some seedy motel that has a deal with the Room Salon.

This post probably won't survive 1 hour, and i strongly believe prostitution is wrong, but people should know what's up. I walked around for months not realizing how many places of prostitution were all around me.

OK, I admit that I have been to one once in Daegu.
I helped open a hogwan by giving speaking tests to kids, and a speech to the parents. Once everything was done the owner took the staff out to dinner at TGI Friday's. Near the end of the dinner one of the managers of the school approached a Korean, another foreigner and me and said to come with him.
We did as he asked, and the next thing I knew we were heading to a room salon called Paradise.
I can tell you that the whiskey and beer was flowing, and the women were hot and friendly. But since no form of sex is allowed on the premises, they were not friendly in that way.
We all sang, drank, and had a good time. As it was winding down, the manager who brought us asked us if we wanted to bring some Paradise home. The 3 of us who were brought there said no, so the women escorted us out to the taxis and said goodnight; the manager stayed behind.
I did not pay a dime as the owner of the hogwan gave the manager his credit card and told him to take care of us. Yes, he is loaded from having 3 very successful Korean hogwans in Daegu for 15 years.

I walked by the Yongsan RLD for ages (on my way to Space 9) and never knew I was passing by a RLD. My gf actually pointed it out. Ever time we walk by she always peeks in to check out the women.

Room salons don't always offer sex. I know a girl who got a waitressing job and quit on the spot when she heard she'd have to pour the customers' drinks. It's also possible you have to pay extra to get extra services.

In Japan they have places like these with a big menu of services you can pay for, starting at talking to them for a short time, then moving up the price ladder to cumming on their faces being at the top.

I dunno about Room Salons but I've been in a juicy bar (by accident and left as soon as I got charged 30k for two drinks; had a nice massage though so got my money's worth and fooked off when she wanted another drink) and an outright wh0rehouse in Itaewon. Me and a friend were drunk as hell one night and decided to go in and just be stupid (not have sex - just be drunk idiots taking the piss).

"You want me to pay you to drink that?" my friend asked, very amusingly at the time.

The prozzies on both occasions were not in the least bit attactive and my understanding is that if you wanna screw, you're looking at 200 notes at least.

Avoid the whole shower I say.

That's the top? I would've thought your average Japanese businessman could think up something a bit more extreme than that.

I think some of the posters here have a bit of a misconception about room salons. Having been in the import/export business in my past life, I have done alot of business in Seoul and I can speak from experience. It sounds like, xingyiman, that what you saw weren't room salons. I've never seen one where girls are out on the street dragging guys in. Most are discrete as you won't even see any girls when you first walk in, just the madame or the waiter. The highest end room salons don't even have signs that would hint that it's a room salon.

Here is a basic rundown:

1. Yes, they are very expensive. You are expected to buy bottles of whiskey and order side dishes as well. A general rule of thumb is that you buy a bottle for each guy. Since a bottle of whisky runs anywhere from 250,000W to 1,000,000W depending on the type of whiskey, you can see how this adds up quickly. You are also expected to tip the hostess girls, the waiter, the band, etc. So, again, general rule of thumb is about 1,000,000W for each person. This depends on the quality of the room salons. I was lucky enough to go to the most expensive one in Seoul and every girl there was probably Miss Korea material. Suffice it to say, the place had astronomical prices.

2. Most people who go to room salons go for business reasons or at least the auspices of one. I don't know too many people who frequent room salons on their own dime. If you or the executives of your company frequent one room salon, the madame will allow you to keep a running tab of the bill and just settle it at the end of the month or at a specified amount. Again, the better customer that you are, more leeway you have.

3. You'd be surprised how many business deals get done in these places. That's just the way of the Korean business world. I've been to ones where in the middle of carousing, one of the guys asks all the girls to step outside so we can talk business. After an agreement was reached, everyone came back and we partied on into the night.

4. Some room salons and some women in them will go home with you or what is called "e-cha" 2nd round). It depends on how good of a customer you are and your partner. Of course, you have to give her extra money for this. I've seen some room salons where none of the girls will do this and some where most of the girls will do so. It all depends.

5. Most of the girls working in these places are young. The girls will range from full timers to students looking to earn some extra cash. I've seen some girls from wealthy families who do this because they love to party.

I hope this info helps.
