The fact that you are concerned about the dog and your child is reassuring. You might try looking at what knowledgeable people have to say:

Training the dog AND child is important (it isn't all intuitive):

I grew up with dogs and I found information on some of these sites that I had forgotten about or never knew. If I had a child and wanted a dog, I would certainly do a little research. Dogs are great for children, but you do want the experience to be good for both the child and the dog. Good luck.

Golden Retriever. Hands down the best breed on the planet for their combination of beauty, intelligence and a gentle nature.

Good luck finding one here, I suppose.

I love golden retrievers too. But I doubt I'll ever find a dog that will rival my Jindo/Punsan mix. He's the smartest, most sweet-natured, well-behaved and gorgeous dog I've ever met.

Lucky me! Smile

I second this motion.
I own a jindo and she is fine in my 24 pyung officetel. She doesnt smell, bark, do her business indoors, and is awesome around people. They will be extremely loyal to your family.

Wow, I never got an email that there were replies!

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. If we had a nice fenced in yard, I would love to get a lab or similar, but unfortunately we just have a park a few minutes away.

I'm willing to spend the time to train the dog in terms of barking, and like I said, I'm home so the dog would be home alone maybe a few hours a week or so. I would much rather adopt a dog from a shelter, but I don't know if I should be nervous about not knowing the dog's history because I have a young child. ??

If I do go to a shelter, what's the procedure like? Would it work out well to see each dog's reaction/interaction with my son in that setting? My son has been around dogs all his life, but we never lived with one, and I'm anticipating that in many ways it'll be like having another child - except non-human...

Thanks for all the photos! If anyone has any experiences at a shelter I would live to know what it's like.

We bought a female pug and love her to death. The only problem is that she does shed. But she is very friendly, never bites or shows aggression, loves to laze around the apartment all day. She is very smart and was honestly house trained in less than a week. Once you pug, you can't stop.

Don't they look like little pigs with large eyes?

slightly unrelated by i found a big doberman in our neighbourhood and it is the best natured, friendliest, most playful dog i have ever seen. Very submissive and kind too.
It is great to know that dogs like that have to be trained to become crazy.
I would love to have a dog like ol' soon do ri.
sadly, he is utterly gigantic and a bit flopsy. Cute outside in a parking lot; not so cute in an apartment.
For now, my jindo is perfect. I can't WAIT for this stupid cast to come off.

Having a pug is kind of like having a pot bellied pig. They do snort and snore and generally make a lot of noise, but its endearing. Just makes them all the cuter.

Last week I found an abandoned black poodle puppy and he is currently in my apartment. I had him checked by my vet and he is healthy. He is playful, sweet and well-behaved and should be trainable since he is still a pup.

I was planning to take him to the shelter in Daegu (the only no-kill facility in Korea), but I'd much rather place him directly with a loving family. He would be great with children.

PM me if anyone is interested.
