So, I was walking around GumYang for the first time today and walked past a Sexy Bar. After reading the posting on Room Saloons, I was curious enough to go in.

I was greeted by two ladies - one Korean, one Russian. Both were wearing bras - C cups. A good start until the Russian said, "Sorry, only Korean men."

I told her that I thought that wasn't legal and told her to call the police. She agreed but said that's how the owner wanted it. With really no other options, I left.

Nothing boils my blood quicker then hearing those words. I guess it's just a pet peeve. Logically, I agree. If I own a bar/club/business and I pay the rent, I should be able to decide who I serve. But it still bothers me.

I went to a dance club in AnSan about two months ago and had the same experience. I was pissed. It took 4 waiters and 2 door men to escort me out.

You should have shown them your Stonecutter's ring:

or, just wear a pinstripe suit courtesy of Dongdaemun and dark sunglasses and flash a wad of cash.

Many of those places don't accept casual passers-by. You'd probably need a Korean friend with some good connections.

You're in Suwon. There are several bars like this in Bundang, including Seohyun, Sunae, and Yatap. They seem to have no problem with foriegners.

I went to the Sexy Bar at Seohyeon and was denied access, even after the guy promoting it outside gave me and my pal a ticket to scratch and win a free drink. The rejection hurt a bit, but I do agree that a private club can have who they want in. (We were dressed nicely, I'm fairly sure it was because we were foreigners that we were turned away.)

It helps to be ugly or older. Then you aren't competition and fodder for extreme jealousy as the girls oogle the exotic young stud. Many a Korean men just can't deal with the sight of foreigner gathering so much attention, if you catch my drift. It is a pride thing.

Try going there with a Korean co-worker. I agree though, they can play the racism up pretty hard in many female-display bars here. I've been to two. Not because I was interested in sexy girls, but because I was really curious what all of the hub-ub was about. The BBE looks to females for friendship.

They didn't turn me away, and actually, the waitress was all excited to practice her English on a foreigner, even though I am quite scary looking. I made friends with a Korean guy there, and we exchanged numbers. Went back with a co-worker, another friend, and that Korean guy I met before.

Been back a few times alone. One girl always tries to spend time with me. Beer is 5,000 won. Talk is free. Sometimes, I get snacks for free. Last time, two Korean guys gave me some extra friend chicken!

On two occasions, I have made it a point to leave when it got busy. I heard one grumpy and semi-drunk Korean guy complaining that my K-buddy and I were hogging the girls (really just the best one) so we decided it was best to leave. Staying would have stressed her, anyway.

Low and behold, this same girl leans over to me the other night and says, "I like you." Then, I was invited out drinking with two of the girls and their Korean friend after work. Wasn't up to it that night, but we will be having lunch tomorrow. It's a friends kind of like, which is just right for the BBE. She is pre-med, and really wants to do language exchange.

Went to another one of these bars just to see what was different. It was bigger, with a few more girls, but had few customers (Tuesday night). The owner looked REALLY hesitant about letting me stay, but I introduced myself very respectfully in Korean, and the other two guys in the bar just laughed at me in utter shock, so he let me stay and have a beer. Boom... another girl wanting to practice her English was hanging out talking to me the whole time. Didn't like the atmosphere (owner) there, so I won't be returning. I'm sure, had it been a busier night, he would have sent me packing immediately. Beers were 10,000 won each, which is another reason why I won't go back.

The friend I have made told me that many of the girls working these bars are making some quick cash while on University break. The girls I spoke with at the other bar confirmed this. The hilarious thing is that the girl at the 2nd bar was telling me all about her foreign English teacher, whom she can't stand. She said he told his class that he likes going to Yagwons. However he intended that to sound, it gave me quite a laugh, because now his students think he is byeonteh (nevermind that the woman telling me this works in a sexy bar).

The other thing she told me is that her foreign English teacher is an alcoholic.

Sound familiar?

I've come to realize that Alcoholism is a very common problem for many teachers here. Sad.

Oh, by the way, the girls at these bars don't want "Lady Drinks," and they don't leave with customers for money. I even tried to buy drinks for the girls a few times, and was turned down flat. They usually seem to wear Hooters-style clothing -- not bikinis. My new Korean friend told me, with a shimmer in his eye, that the girls in Kangnam wear string bikinis and that the bar has mirrors on the floor.

Also, a Korean guy came into the bar asking to barfine a girl, and they told him he was in the wrong place.

I hear the sexy bar near Yatap is very popular with the foreign construction workers brought in from North America. Apparently, they are here to build the popular new Western-style houses, which must go to the ultra-rich crowd.

Off topic, but those workers often get stiffed by their bosses.

Prostitutes (or any other similar sex workers) have the right to turn down anyone they don't want as customers. If you want to pay for pretty women's attention, you'd better stick with the ones whose job it is to serve foreigners.

You walked into a place of prostitution, were told "korean men only", and your response was "that's illegal??" Say what? Would you report your herb dealer to the Better Business Bureau for skimping on a sack?

No.

Booking clubs aren't that exciting. In my town for example, the only night clubs here are booking clubs. In the tamest sense it just means that you can book, or be booked by, other people. If you like the look of someone at another table tell a waiter to send him/her over. He'll go ask them to come over; sometimes they'll put on a show of not wanting to go, but they'll do as they're told eventually. Most of the time its just a way to avoid having to initiate a conversation with a stranger yourself, you get the waiter to do it for you.

I've been booked by girls and booked them a few times.

If you're a rich old man then you might take your bookee to a private room with a bottle of whiskey though.. perhaps not every girl there is just a fellow customer.

I always thought that 'sexy bars' were juicy bars and that booking clubs don't have girls on the payroll. or at least they have girls that aren't on the payroll. if you walk into a place and you're greeted by a russian girl, that screams juicy bar. in a booking club, you'll be greeted by a lot of hurried looking dudes in swanky (cheap) suits.

well, that was my impression anyways. can somebody straighten this out?

It sounded like just a regular cacktail bar, where the drinks are slightly overpriced, you're not obligated to buy lady drinks, and the girls sit behind the bar, chat, and pretend to be interested. The only difference with the sexy bar places is that they're more scantily-clad.

This one sounded a bit different from a sexy bar in that there was a Russian working, but sexy bars are quite different from juicy bars, I think. I've never actually been to a sexy bar, though, so I can't say for sure, but that's the impression that I get. Cacktail bars have seen me a few times, as some of my Korean buddies like going there for a nightcap. I don't think they're all that bad- more relaxed atmosphere than a hof, and I can practice my Korean with someone considerably cuter than the ajeossis I usually end up talking with. None of us have ever actually gone into one of those bars with any pretenses of hooking up.

Simple answer is to one day open a place yourself that discriminates against Koreans. I suggest a bar in the Philippines. Either that or go into business making shitloads off them. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
