I give DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash props for the technical inovations they made (sampling, two channel mixing, etc...), but just because they were the first, doesn't mean they were the best.
I love NWA and Public Enemy; while they do fall under the general category of "Hip Hop", I put them more in the specific "Gangsta Rap" section of my brain.

1. Nas - Illmatic
2. BIG - Life After Death
3. Q-Tip - Q-Tip <- not very influential, but eternally enjoyable
4. NWA - Straight Outa Compton <- this one is a must, isn't it?

| I don't know enough about the genre to list 5 fave albums but I do like one of Ice Cube's (the one with "What can I do today?" the opening track), Doggystyle and The Game's album 'The Documentary', which is very recent. |

Nas's Illmatic, takes it for me too. For me its the perfect hip hop album. No filler, no 'guest' appearances, fantastic lyrics, its got it all. What makes it even more amazing is that he was only 20 when he made it.
Heads up on some of the recommendations, i'll look into them. |

| I forgot, i've also got to throw Tailb Kweli and Hi Tek's 'Reflection Eternal' into the ring, one of the most underrated hiphop albums, PERIOD. True hiphop, not the watered down tripe all over the radio back home and here. |
