Who is your favorite fashion designer, or least favorite; and why?
For starters, I do have an affinity for the cold designers: I mean cold colors, cold cuts: like Prada. But it's too robot, too modern, I mean, if we all dress like Star Trek in the furure, that's gonna be sad. But on the other hand, Versace is just to rich, too green, too Mediterranean. By nature I am a cold person, yet I adore the luxury of Versace's style. Despite their prices, Prada is not real luxury and opulence. But I did love Versace's line, "I love Los Angeles, it's so superficial." At least he admits it and and sees the beauty in what is shallow.
For complexity of statement, Alexander McQueen and that crew deserve recognition, but their work is Art, no one would wear that, there has to be a line somewhere that says: 'beyond here is not fashion anymore, it's Art.'
I love Kenneth Cole, not for his run of the mill stuff, but for his sarcasm, his ads are too funny: "Ten million people are dying of AIDS/but we prefer to stay clothes minded."
Yves Saint Laurent, the "last true couture," should make a sophisticated taste happy. But what is he doing that wasn't done in the 50's, his stuff looks like what Jackie O wore. His claims to avant garde seem to come to nothing but cuts on a bias.
The fashion designer I most like the work of is Dolce and Gabbana. They have the luxurious extravagance of Versace, but their colors are less rich, maybe some countess from Norther Italy might fit into their fashion.
As a further topic of discussion, how racist are the big fashion houses? Even Anna Sui is a born and bread American. Would Ralph Lif$hitz really have failed if he hadn't changed his name? Can you name even one Oriental Model. And not for lack of beauty. Has anyone been watching the Korean I am a Model? Frankly only the one contestant is too beautiful, but the pannel of judges sure are beautiful. These days the runway models are more and more coming from Eastern Europe: the same look, but they come cheap. Why has the Euro-American fashion industry accepted Africans, but not Orientals? |

| Big fan of fashion, (on others) and don't know a thing really, but I will say that a lot of the merchants over at dong-dae moon have a real sense of picking up on what is going to be hot and pandering it to the masses. Sometimes they make mistakes like the tweed shorts with cuff, stocking under, that make even a graceful women look butch. Rather look at paint dry than that. |

Calvin Klein.
Why?
I feel like a big shot when I'm wearing him.
Wow...
That's sounds gay.
Wow...
I sound homophobic.
Hmmm...
I'm done here. |

Are we talking about houses, or designers? I love John Galiano and Christian Lacrois.
Vivian Westwood is still at the top of her game. Alexander McQueen and Gautier too are good.
My favorite? Probably it would be Westwood or Gautier.
Why black models and not Asian? I would say that there are probably two reasons- first, due to slavery and colonialism, blacks are much more a part of western culture than Asians. Also, yes there are very beautiful Asian women, of course, but they are short!
That being said, there is one model, and I don't know her name, but she is quite popular with the haute Vogue and W crowd, who is half Asian and quite spectacularly unusual looking. |

| Half of my wardrobe is Tommy H. I never intend on buying the name, but I just find myself loving the clothes! Gautier, Prada, Dulce and Gabbana....Don't like the look or the price (OUCH!) |

Jean Paul Gaultier
The runway stuff is fun to look at, not always practical to wear. |

| I know I am going to get blasted, but I think the fashion industry is by far the most useless industry that is and has ever existed. Models and designers are useless, many clothes are useless, and people will pay big bucks to wear a piece of clothing that has some guys name on it to feel just a little more important. I don't even know how many of the clothes these designers sell are actually even designed by the designers. |

Old Navy's a real store. Basic designs, durable and cheap.
www.oldnavy.com
I have a couple of pair of Old Navy military-style pants.. Made in Cambodia.
I'm guessing in a sweatshop atmosphere. |

I've been into dress clothes.
Hugo Boss used to rock my world a long time ago, especially dress shirts and cologne.
Giorgio Armani provided me suitwise and with designer glasses.
The Gap contributed several functional casualwear items, including a few shirts and slacks still in my wardrobe.
My clothes don't have obvious labels on the outside, as I'm not into being an advertising billboard for ANY company. (Hence, no Nike sportswear.)
I simply have liked the quality, style, fit and feeling with many products by those designers.
But I haven't been into clothes shopping since I began teaching overseas in 2002. Except for my Hush Puppies hunting in New Zealand, which paid off.
And the men's fashion designers I've seen lately (a bit here and there incidentally) just don't appeal. |

Not true. You are exactly correct. High Fashion is useless. Like High Art and High Religion. It doesn't build hydro dams or desalinize water. But that's not what it's for. For everyone who is not living hand to mouth, you gotta have something to do with your time and energy. I myself am not the owner of anyfashion clothes, but a few years back I got on a big kick watching FTV all the time and reading up on the "history of costume" and about the big designers. Fashion is useless, mostly. @VanIslander seems to have some pretty practical articles in his wordrobe. And a good suit will last way longer, and be in style way way longer than a cheaper one. But, wasn't it Hugo Boss that designed the Nazi uniforms, not that 65 years later it matters?
Also I don't know that The Gap and Old Navy qualify as Fashion. |
