University jobs are currently being advertised (to start on 1 Mrch).
Are there any other specific hiring periods/dates for uni jobs in Korea?
Thanks. |

Try looking over at the wiki over at www.galbijim.com OP. I'm sure it has lots of interesting info on university positions. |

In general, the better the university, the quicker the positions are filled. Most jobs start coming up at the end of the previous semester, and people are interviewed, hired and signed by Jan/early Feb.
Then again, there are STILL universities advertising now (Feb 27th) for the Spring 06 semester. These universities tend to be bottom wrung institutions in out of the way places.
You want the best possible job for your level of education and experience. Pay is going down, contact hours are going up, there are term limits now (3 years, usually), a lot of places want you to teach summer/winter 'camps', and vacations are getting shorter. For those without the experience/higher degrees that can snatch up the last of the decent jobs, university teaching is fast approaching hakwon status. In many cases, the university run hakwons are BETTER than teaching in the actualy university programs. |

The university where I was teaching last semester advertised in October and hired in November for the semester starting today.
I think you will find that the better positions will be opened and filled early.
The less desireable positions will open today and tomorrow - when the people don't show up for them - because they found something better. |

While this info on unis is generally true, we DO sometimes find ourselves in the postion of trying to hire someone at the last minute. We've had people change their minds (after signing a month or more ago), problems with immigration (if you've been caught teaching illegally, it WILL turn up when you go for your next job!!) and problems with "reputation". While it's true we ARE a little bit out of the way (but GREAT country fresh air!!), we offer good pay, good hours and good vacation. |

There is second boom for university jobs in early summer for the september openings. However, the primary boom is always late fall early winter for march positions.
That is unless you have contacts...... |

Look at University and College vacation programs
Though I've never done one, working a summer or winter program can be an ideal way to get your foot in the door of a small university or college. If the camp director is faculty of the school, and/or your co-workers are teaching faculty, they can recommend you for year-round positions. This 'word of mouth' is how most good small university and college positions are filled. |

Ajuma, I'm curious as to the employment terms at your university. How many contact hours? How many courses (hence preps)? How many students per class? Monthly salary? Housing or housing allowance? Is housing adaquate (would YOU live in it)? Mandatory overtime? Mandatory 'camps'? Institute teaching? Fully paid summer/winter vacations? Some of the smaller schools are getting pretty dodgy. Thanks for any input. |

The university jobs have all been taken. I'm sorry, but you're too late.
You might want to try Laos instead. |

I wrote a long reply to PRagic, but of course I got a "Critical Error, could not connect..."
Anyway, PRagic, if you're still interested, PM me and I'll send you the details...barring Critical Errors!! |

Ajuma: The P/M isn't working, either. Just post it up on the board or try to P/M me if you have the time.
Son Deureo: Loads of university jobs around. The tough part is finding a good one. |

re: university jobs. I'm about to finish three years at my school and I'm interested in working in a university. Where's the best place to search for university jobs, and is there some kind of rating system applied to each university? [UK universities are assessed every few years] Thanks. Johnny Daegu. |

No rating system here save the word on the street. If you have your MA, just try and get the best possible work environment you can. Shoot for as close as you can get to 10-12 contact hours, 2.5-3.0 million, and fully paid summer/winter breaks (tag on housing if you need/want it). Good luck! |
