No love for the originators? |
I give DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash props for the technical inovations they made (sampling, two channel mixing, etc...), but just because they were the first, doesn't mean they were the best.
I love NWA and Public Enemy; while they do fall under the general category of "Hip Hop", I put them more in the specific "Gangsta Rap" section of my brain.
Most powerful three words of a rap song? "STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON!!!!"
Deltron 3030! I'm the only one to put this on my list?! Please reconsider!
Deltron 3030
Delton 3030 - Video for "Virus"
Also for your consideration, Handsome Boy Modeling School's "So... How's Your Girl?" |

Anyone into Dr. Octagon? |
Nice!! I just got on to say a word about Dr. Octagon's players.
Have you heard Kool Keith's SEX STYLE? 'nother good one from that guy, but most of the other stuff sucks...
What about Prince Paul's A Prince Among Thieves... Kool Keith's track on that one kills me.
Keith: "What's the Password, Nerd?"

Without looking at anyone else's lists, here's what comes to the top of my head. These 5 are in no particular order.
1. Nas - Illmatic
2. BIG - Life After Death
3. Q-Tip - Q-Tip <- not very influential, but eternally enjoyable
4. NWA - Straight Outa Compton <- this one is a must, isn't it?
5. Outkast - Aquemeni |

"It's a Big Daddy Thing"--Big Daddy Kane
"Follow The Leader"--Eric B. & Rakim
"Fear Of A Black Planet"--Public Enemy
"O.G. Original Gangster"--Ice-T
"As Nasty As They Wanna Be"--2Live Crew (the scratching on this LP still hasn't been bettered) |

Sorry I was thinking more about sound, not socially conscious lyrics. Let us never speak of this again. |

| I don't know enough about the genre to list 5 fave albums but I do like one of Ice Cube's (the one with "What can I do today?" the opening track), Doggystyle and The Game's album 'The Documentary', which is very recent. |

Well, I would say that these ones top the list, but if I am given any sort of time I would just get lost trying to sort through
De La Soul: Three Feet High and Rising
Deltron 3030
Outkast
Jurassic 5
Blackalicious:NIA
Honorable mention goes to
Public Enemy (of course)
Common
The Roots

Del the Funkee Homosapien
Dan the automator
The Goats

The Jungle Brothers
Black Sheep
I have to stop...it goes on and on... |

Nas's Illmatic, takes it for me too. For me its the perfect hip hop album. No filler, no 'guest' appearances, fantastic lyrics, its got it all. What makes it even more amazing is that he was only 20 when he made it.
Heads up on some of the recommendations, i'll look into them. |

| I forgot, i've also got to throw Tailb Kweli and Hi Tek's 'Reflection Eternal' into the ring, one of the most underrated hiphop albums, PERIOD. True hiphop, not the watered down tripe all over the radio back home and here. |
