So, it's okay for Muslims to drink beer as long as it's Carlsberg? |

What's up with Syria recalling its ambassador to Denmark?
They're supposed to be a secular republic and have had their own fights with religious groups.
"Pandering" appears to be the only explanation. |

That's the likely explanation. I doubt any of the governments in that area want to be known as the one taking the weakest stand. Probably a lot of one-upmanship going on. |

Yup. Showmanship.
It's that or the Assad dynasty is signaling they are dropping Ba'athism in place of seeking broader support in the Middle East from Muslims.
Maybe they've looked at the Hamas win, seen their trad allies the PLO blown away and are reading the writing on the wall.
Pan-Arabism seems pretty passé these days, a smart autocrat is going to change his rhetoric with the times.
Syria started to cooperate with the West and got nothing but attitude for what they saw as going out on a limb for the US (like Iran).
Now they`re swinging the other way too.
N.B. I`m not defending Syria here. Analyzing perceived reasons for behaviour is not the same as defending it. |

Why do you constantly feel the need to say 'well some Christians are nutters to', as if this explains away the rather uncomfortable fact that muslims, yet again, are showing just how incompatible their religion is with Western cultural norms.

Anyway I think we should all do our bit to support freedom of speech as long as it doesn't cross our 'collective' ethical boundaries. |
And what exactly are these 'collective' ethical boundaries? |
I don't respect blind hatred and disrespect for other peoples. I've met some wonderfully nice Muslims, who have disgust for the extremists, you can't lump all people together. My last boss was a Buddhist and he was a piece of *beep*, doesn't mean I think all Buddhist types are arseholes.
'Collective boundaries' refer to the values that most Europeans share, the most civilised, tolerant and free continent in the world. Freedom of speech is very important. |

Yes, but look around the world. Which is more tolerant, Islam, or Buddhism? Islamic nations and cultures have a hard time being tolerant of others. You can't ddeny that. Just look anywhere in the world. I'm not for tainting an entire religion, but there are issues for Muslims to examine here - but they seem too bent on hatred to introspect. We have an introspective tradition in the west - it's not so developed in Islamic cultures. |

You're right vertical and I completely concur. Islam has some serious issues regarding intolerance and ridiculous ambition to conquer the world. The vast majority of Muslim people are actually moderate. The most Islamic place I've been was the NE of Malaysia and it is pretty full on and virtually has Sharia law.
I met some really nice people there and remember vividly sitting next to a Muslim women-in the full Burka thing- who was chatting in English on messenger, I'm not a particularly nosey person but I did look and she was having a borderline pornographic sex talk with another English speaker I though it was hilarious and so incongruos.
I don't hate Muslims, but I do hate bigots no matter what religion or ethnicity they are. |

Yes. Most of the Muslims I have met were quite nice and intelligent. Not the kind of people who would run into the street to burn flags for a cartoon.
As for the riots/protests...The people are extremists, or being manipulated by such people. Extremists encourage such displays of mob mentality in order to slowly indoctrinate the more impressionable and desperate youth into their organisations. |

If the 'vast majority' of muslims are 'moderate', then why, in a recent Telegraph poll did over half of UK muslims say they would like Western society overthrown, albeit 'peacefully'. I would argue that wanting to replace Western democracy with Shariah Law is the precise opposite of moderate.
And why, if the 'vast majority' of muslims are 'moderate', are muslim states, with few exceptions, intolerant, anti-democratic, illiberal hell-holes. The fact is that you have no basis for making such a statement, although it must be comforting to constantly repeat such platitudes ad nauseum. The facts are far more worrying. Islam is not a tolerant, peaceful religion, the vast majority of muslims are not moderate, and growing muslim populations in the West undermine our security and future stability. |
