Is anyone using an LCD or DLP projector at home? I am tempted to buy one when I go back for vacation. They are almost half of what you would pay here.
The only turn-off is the bulb... when that goes out, you're looking at paying 500,000 won for a new one! I'm just wondering if I would use it that much to worry about it. |

Yes, I have one, and it is awesome. I haven't had it long enough to worry about bulb replacement however. I have a regular smallish-sized TV for regular viewing, and I use the projector for movies and sports. An absolutely great investment, IMO. |

Cool!
Would love some details. What resolution is it, etc? Do you run it with DVI input, or S-Video, RGB? Is it noisy? What make is it?
You are using it exactly as I have been considering. |

It's the LG RD-JT92. It's a 480p, DLP projector.
It is very quiet. I have it ceiling mounted right above my couch and I can't hear it. I have it connected via DVI to my computer, and by S-video to the skylife box. DVI looks excellent, and the S-video looks good. I think it would look better, but I've heard that Skylife isn't digital so that could be the problem. It also has VGA and RGB inputs.
Now, I bought this bad boy in Korea, because it was the best/cheapest projector I could find here, and I got a pretty good deal on it, all things considered. In your situation, you're probably better off going with a different make/model. If you DO decide to buy here, give this one a look, I'm pretty happy with it. |

I want one. How much do one of these bad boys cost?
When I move into a half decent place a nice comfy environment to watch films and listen to music in is a big priority. That and a decent kitchen. |

Prices will obviously vary quite a bit. Mine was a good deal (in Korea) at 1.3 million won. |

Thunndarr, what size is your image? Did you get a screen up yet? There are some very nice ones out there for 800,000 won incl. installation: better-than-average quality screen material, quite sturdy & reliable, remote-controlled and wall switch-controlled (together, not either/or) 80" ~ 120", cut to order. And there are many extremely cheap manual screens, too.
I remember you were originally considering that edgy-looking wall-mountable projector from LG. (here) The more I looked at that model, the more it got me wondering, Can one have too many projectors?
(If you look carefully, I believe there's a projector somewhere in that photo.) Anyway, the wall-mounted design is sleek, stylish and space-saving. Looks absolutely 007ish in a room alongside a flat wall-mounted "designer" A/C unit. Obviously it isn't going to work for everyone in every setting. Unlike ceiling-mounted or to a lesser degree coffee table-mounted, you don't have total flexibility with respect to distance from the screen, since you can't move your walls to where you want them.

Yes. Yes.
This will sound crass, but I'd honestly have to say that roughly 10 people out of 10 who've seen my setups (one a dedicated HT, another a more practical living room setup, and the third in the office) will go "Woooow! ", and 3 out of 10 will go home that night and start Googling, emailing me questions, etc. and likely get one of their own. It's not just the "awesome" viewing experience, which Thunndarr mentions. It's also the affordability (even at Korean prices, BBE) of projector & screen compared to (much smaller) plasma & lcd TVs.
About lamps & lamp life: Invest some time/money/thought/effort into lighting control in the room where you'll be using the projector. This not only enhances the whole cinematic "mood", but it will also enable you to set your projector lamp on "econo mode" and leave it there forever, thus maximising lamp life by probably more than 1,000 hours.
Every movie you own or have rented or have seen at the cinema will at once seem "new" again when you watch it on a projector & big screen. As a result, you'll put the biggest dent in your projector's lamp life in the first few months of ownership. But it will be HEAVENLY!!! |

My screen is about 210x120 centimeters. So, that's a little over 80 inches wide. I would have liked to go bigger, but in my room, that's about as big as I can go. Anyway, the screen is nothing special, just a cheap, retractable, matte white 1.0 gain screen. To my admittedly un-jaded eyes it looks quite good.
JG, you're right, I did originally want the LG AN110, but I got tired of waiting around for it, and the estimated price kept going up, so I took the plunge.
On a more personal level, after having owned the projector a mere 4 odd months or so, I still get a giddy feeling every time I fire it up to watch a movie. To me, it feels like waking up at 6 a.m. Christmas morning as a kid. I'm sure that feeling will eventually subside, but it hasn't yet, and I'm as happy tonight as when I first got it. |

Nothing crass about it at all. You've shown people an eye-popping image that is both several times larger and a fraction of the price (well, perhaps, I don't really know what kind of setup you've got) of LCD or PDP displays. I am more surprised by the 7 out of 10 who don't show more interest. Of course, I am obviously biased. |

Don't hold your breath.
Seriously, when you get ambient light under control, you get a nice little (or big) surround sound system, some comfy seating in there... That rush you get when the lamp first splashes the image on the screen, that never gets old. About the only time I start to take it all for granted and forget to show proper respect and awe is, like, by the third film of a rainy Sunday movie marathon.
I've heard only two regrets from people who've converted to the Church of the Big Screen. (1) Not taking the plunge earlier and thereby cheating themselves out of years of cinematic bliss, and (2) It can make watching movies (or sports) on even the biggest, most expensive TVs less satisfying. |

I have a inFocus hooked up to a 2.4 Ghz laptop and Logitech surround sound speakers; the screen is the entire wall of the family room (about 8-9' diagonal). Very sweet. Surfing Dave's and playing games is awesome but I'm going to be doing less of that as I want to save the lamp life for movies. The eggshell paint scheme is okay but I've been told there is 'movie magic' paint formulated for this exact purpose- unfortunately the hardware stores don't carry it so I am now searching dedicated paint stores as of this weekend.
I got it used with the lamp-life counter at 3 hours used (out of 900-1000 hours estimated lamp life), so I don't know how much a replacement will be (probably at least $300-400 Cdn).

(hmmm, none of the links are cooperating... )
I'm currently using a wireless keyboard and mouse (it came without the remote), but I considering buying one of these on sale this weekend, a 'joystick' style universal remote:
They were $90 Cdn when they first came out but now I can get one for $30. |

I'm SOOOO jealous! I want one bad, but my apartment is too small. Have to wait till the wife talks me into buying a 32 pyung. . Cheers on the projectors...I'll keep hoping.
However, considering ambient light, would it be a good alternative to buy a modern DLP rear-projector? They look nice at E-mart and cost about the same as a projector setup. They are so crisp, and big (well...not 100 inches...but big at 52). And you don't have to buy a screen (apparently expensive grey ones look much better [sic]) and, I would guess very expensive heavy black curtains and/or blinds for the big Korean living room window/balcony. That must add up to a lot. I've also heard that professional installation is highly recommended because of all the mounting and callibrating that needs to be done. More money there.
Edit: please don't take this as flaming. I'm really interested in what would be the best alternative. Cheers and good job on getting such a nice setup! |

I have no idea. I really lucked into mine (free) but I wouldn't recommend them for everyone, there are some pretty good reasons to not buy them as well, as you and others have already touched on. My family room is in a finished basement and is usually pretty dark even on the brightest of days. I also don't have to worry about breaking it during an intercontinental move. I thought about having one in Korea but it was just too impractical.
But where there's a will there's a way, and they are really cool. I'm just bummed out that I haven't found a USB or pcmcia tv tuner for my laptop in time for superbowl. |

Yah, those things were designed for the "basement theater"! I wish I had a basement to put one in. LOL. No basements in Korea, unfortunately.
Nice Dell! Never seen a notebook with two disc-drives! About the remote; I think you should go with an RF remote instead of Infrared. The RF you don't have to have pointed at the TV 'eye' all the time. I have an IR remote I bought in Korea and its not that great IMHO. |

How do you feel about the resolution on yours? Is there any "screen door effect?" That resolution is supposed to match DVDs really well, right? That is about 90% what I would use it for. Maybe a few PC movies too. Am wondering if it's better for me to go XGA or WVGA.
Any thoughts? |
