Last winter Olympics, Koreans hacked his personal web site and wrote "Fvck You" ad nauseum all over the place, and he got a bunch of hate mail and phone threats. He feeded that fire by making inflamatory comments in the press too. His ego probably couldn't allow his K-pals to get the better of him, even in the gold to silver medal difference.
Just goes to show that an athlete just needs to focus on his/her own game. Too bad for Ohno, but he seemed really the vindictive type too.
I actually didn't watch it last night though. Does anyone have a link to somewhere that does have it, even snippets of it, on the net? (I imagine Korean TV will have it replayed over and over though--just don't have the patience to "wade and row" through the local tv listings) |
I've had the news on for an hour now (YTN) and it's been on twice - a few photographs of the two Korean winners, a little bit on the sport itself and no word of Ohno. |
Any mention that the victory was cheapened by the Chinese skater who bumbed into the Canadian skater, who probably would have ended up with gold or silver, so that the other Chinese skater would get a shot at a medal? By the looks on the faces of the Korean skaters on the podium, I'd say they weren't too pleased about it. Nobody likes to win like that.

Any mention that the victory was cheapened by the fact the Canadian skater, who probably would have ended up with gold or silver, was purposely taken out of the race by a Chinese skater so the other would get a shot at a medal? By the looks on the faces of the Korean skaters while they were standing on the podium, I'd say they weren't too pleased about it. |
I was stretching and not paying too much attention so I'm not sure, but I don't recall anything about that on tv. All I remember was them looking surprisingly unexited and just reporting what happened. |

Ohno vs the Koreans. Is this some kind of twilight zone deja vu?
Fortunately, I'm in Canada and haven't watched all that much of the olympics, so this is the first I've heard of it. |

| but to gve credit when its due! that korean skater is the current world champion BTW.. so it would have been a great race between him and Apollo.. I think those two pretty much take turns at being number 1 for the 1500 in the world.. |

from the calgary sun article:

t was more strategy by the Chinese because they were two," said Hamelin, showing no anger. "One tried to pass me and bump me and the other passed me and finished third.
"It happens a lot with the Asian teams. It's just like that. You just have to push it out of your head and concentrate on your next race." |

Excuse me, I've got to vent. There are many things about Korea that are absolutely illogical and plain stupid...but the Ohno incident of 2002 was ridiculous. These people have held this grudge and treated this guy like the Antichrist. When he came to Korea a little while back and tried to make amends, the Koreans continued to rip on him. My students just became damn near incendiary whenever his name was mentioned.
So, now that Korea has its pitiful gold medal, I won't give kudos to them. They are poor winners. They pissed and moaned for 4 years about a supposed injustice(hey, blame the judge not Anton). And now they are gloating. Well, guess what, you didn't defeat Ohno. You may have won the gold but the luster isn't there without the Ohno thing directly involved. He probably would have won the medal again and that would have really pissed off the K-people. Yeah, I'm sure that they would have been burning American flags and posting crap on his website.
Oh, and I don't know what stations some of you are watching but whenever they mention Ohno, the announcers are smiling like a couple of hyenas. They care more about Ohno than the gold medal.... |
What do you mean? Ohno got beat. He proved himself unable to even finish a race. Talk about a bad skater. The guy cheated his way to a gold medal and then couldnt stay on his skates. Ohno means nothing and a win is a win, with or without him. |

You mean Ohno tried to push his way through, maybe even trip up the other skater, then fell himself. He is a cheater, he will cheat anyway he can to win. |

Oh I see, you were watching a different race. He got double teamed in the one that everyone else saw, at an event called the Olympics. |

| Jinju, you never answered my question of why you think Ohno cheated back in 2002. You rant about him pushing his way through, as if its a bad thing. If someone prevents anothers momentum, of course there will be contact. Short track is the NASCAR of skating. Who did he push, how did he cheat, in 2002 to get the gold? |

Uhh, could this be because there are two good Asians on the same team who earned their way to the final. Short track is the roller derby of skating. You can bet that regardless of the country, you'd know exactly where your teammate was if you were both in the final. |

| It sounds like JinJu understands and believes what the Korean media is saying. That's a real unbiased group when it comes to these things. |
