Recruiters gather together once every now and then to cackle evilly about the screwjob they have done on yet another unsuspecting newbie. I always think of recruiters as demons gathering souls for their evil masters. The more they screw you over the more they laugh.
I am sure that a few of them are humanoid in some way shape or form...but their motives are pure unadulterated evil.
What do you call a busload of recruiters going over a cliff? A good start!
What do you call a busload of recruiters going over a cliff with one empty seat? A waste of space!
Whats the difference between a recruiter and a peice of crap? I dont know either |

I would have added something about Dungeons & Dragons RPG in this line "I always think of recruiters as demons gathering souls for their evil masters." |

Recruiters on the whole don't lie, cheat.steal.etc...like you guys make out. |
OMG! You must be one of those 'good recruiters' yourself, right? You've got to be kidding if you think anyone's gonna buy that line of b.s. you just posted.
Get real people! All recruiters are basically worthless liars who woke up one day and decided to utilize the 50 words of English they learned in highschool by screwing naive and unsuspecting foreigners.
NEVER pay someone to do something you can just as easily do yourself. |
OMG...you must be a know-it-all. How many does that make in Korea now????
Please impart me with more of your wisdom so that you can show me the light..
I am not a recruiter. Just I do know one very honest one who does work very hard..... |

Just remember that recruiters have to deal with (a) unreasonable hogwan owners and (b) unreliable foreigners. They're getting it twice as bad.
Thankfully, once one's been in Korea a while their lies become pretty transparent. |

Many foreigners suck, many hagwons suck and many recruiters suck. Until they all stop sucking, things won't change. But in minor defence of recruiters, my recruiter sent me a reply to the question, "What is the dress code?" He said no sandals, tanktops or short shorts (including speedos). I asked him why he said this and he said he has had several complaints from the jobs complaining about this (not just one, several). He was serious about this. There are a lot of bad hagwons (that's why I went to a public school), but there are a lot of stupid foriegners here too. Everyone on this board has met atleast two (and if not, well, you might be the stupid foreigner ). |

By all means, post the name, email and phone number of this hard-working, reliable recruiter and I'm sure we can find at least one person they've screwed.
I don't know-it-all 'just because', but I do know enough about Korean recruiters to keep a wide berth. But I guess one idiot (a.k.a. just because) had to jump in this thread to defend the scum-suckers. |

he is a member if this forum so if he wants to post his details he can....
Let me get this straight though, you applied a week ago and I am pretty sure(going by your terrible condescending attitude) you haven't lived here much longer...
I just love the fresh newbie arrogance that shines right through...
The problem is the quality of teacher that comes here just as much as the quality of recruiter...you just proved that there in your post....grow up |

The date that I joined doesn't necessarily reflect how long I've been here. After teaching for about two years here I met my husband during the 2002 World Cup. So you do the math, if you can.
And I work at a University, so I'm very sure that I'm a quality teacher.
I'm tired of hearing stories from foreigners about the raw deal they got from some recruiter. The more people I can convince to do their own research to get a job - even if I have to use scare tactics - the better.
The bottom line is that most recruiters are unnecessary, unreliable liars out to make a fast buck. I mean for f**** sake, there are recruiters out there still placing people at Ehwa/W Schools when that franchise is clearly going bankrupt in a major hurry. How's that for ethical business practices?
'Just Because', I apologize if I've been condescending or arrogant, I'm just trying to tell it like it is. And I just can't for the life of me understand why you're going to bat for the recruiters with such vigor. |

While this doesn't always indictae a quality teacher it does mean you put some ground work and are qualified to make some critical statements about the subject at hand..

Yes, but I have seen it from the other side as well. Foreigners can be just as ruthless, incompetant and stupid as recruiters are. It is one job I would never do due to the fact I can't believe the stupidity and lack of common sense of a lot of foreigners that come here.
It is not all sunshine and good times as people make out here to be a recruiter, it is hard wrk and a very very competitive environment. Something about too many cooks and not enough applicants..
I do agree with you about doing your own research, especially once you have lived here for a year. I would never use a recruiter either as i have found that your own connections are infinantly more important and trustworthy than anything a recruiter can tell me.

I can't argue with that and some of the attitude of some recruiters are terrible...

I too apologise for condescending and rude and am also just trying to tell it how I have seen it...
I am just also sick of reading about teachers being screwed over when a lot of the time the situation is the foreigners fault and the place blame at anything they can when they have to take a good look at themselves.
I am not saying there are not genuine screw-ups and terrible wonjangs but it is the case all over the world. A lot of foreigners need to develop a backbone and learn the art of give and take.
Remember, we only get to see one side of the story on this forum and even if the teacher was at fault the truth can be twisted here so that they appear the victim...
I have been dealing in generalizations a little and yes, i do some recruiters can be scum of the earth. But there are some genuine and honest ones(and usually are the ones that don't make it due to the nature of the beast)
Anyway, carry on.... |

Ok K_Sherman so why are you using a recruiter at all???
You have experience in country, hence you should be able to finda good job you like by yourself.
As for recruiters, it is amusing how some paint them all black and completely the possibility that there are some good or even excellent recruiters out there. I personally know two of them. They work their butts off to place good teachers at schools that match the preferences those teachers stated. They work with people on the ground here who verify each school they place at. It is hard work and typically they have to go through 10-15 morons before finding 1-2 good teachers.
I also know of one decent local recruiter (near Seoul) who also works like a dog and who has been nothing but supportive of the teachers she places here. In the last year, two of the teachers she placed found themselves without a job because a school suddenly closed (the owner ran into some unexpected trouble and had serious illness right after). Well, she worked like a mad woman and found these two teachers a new job within two weeks while she paid for their hotel during the waiting period.
She also picks up her placements at the airport personally and invites the new teachers to a bbq at her house often.
Now, mud-sling her as you wish...but she is working hard in a tough field of work filled with bad schools and idiot teachers.
I have provided the contact information of these rectruiters on here in the past only to have two of them tell me that they got emailed by a few morons. So now I work through Pm's when a newbie asks for a good recruiter.
They key here is also that recruiters are mostly useful for newbies....old hands should not need to use them but some do. |

Oh my god...they earn a living by providing a service...that is outrageous.
They should be paying you for the honour of finding you a job.
Yes thats how business should run worldwide.

Sure there are some bad, even evil recruiters, but there are some good schools that only hire through recruiters. They hope their recruiters are honest and professional as well. If you don't use a recruiter you will miss out on these opportunities, unless you just happen to walk in and personally apply to that school.
The anti-recruiter attitude won't help you either. We had a teacher come to our school to apply two years ago, through a recruiter. He told us he would lie to the recruiter, tell her that he took some other job, and then come work for us. We could split the fee. The wonjangnim and I were both shocked. After he left the interview, we wrote him off. If he would screw the recruiter so easily, he'd screw the school the same way. |
