Im a newbie, first and foremost, and ive been reading some language thats made me cautious of accepting a visa run for my first job. http://englishschoolwatch.org/quotes_recruiter2.shtml

From the sound of a lot of the threads on here, visa runs happen all the time....should I be concerned with not having an E2 issued before I leave the states...and is my employer viewing this as a probationary period of employment like it says on the mentioned link??? Especially if they hesitate, and do not send me to Japan immediately?? Plus, if the visa run is "kosher" what should I ask for renumeriation/compensation for this journey?? Recruiter quote "Hydrofoil, one night hotel, paid." Should I request the visa processing fee as well? Any hard number figures anyone can provide would be appreciated. Twisted Evil

Do the run as soon as possible after arriving, and you can ask for the visa processing fee, but don't make a fuss if you don't get it. Some schools give it, some don't.

Thanx for your info peppermint, thats basically what ive read, do it immediately, dont let them make you wait for any extended period of time (14 days or more) before you do it, receive payment or make sure travel and hotel are taken care of....and visa fee....50-60 U.S. im reading....sound right to you??? and......I should approach the subject of them paying for the fee before I show up, shouldnt I, if not go as far as to get in writing????? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

I wouldn't be fussy about the VISA fee. If you got your E-2 back in the states they wouldn't be paying for it, so what's the difference. Get them to pay for transportation and hotel.

The hydrofoil ferry and one night's hotel should come to around W220-250,000. They should also give you transportation to and from Busan, and possibly one night in a yogwan there.

Try to insist on doing it as quickly as possible. Until you have it you are working illegally.

Just out of curiosity, why aren't they having you get your visa in the US before you leave? Did they say why? That would be by far the easiest, cheapest, most legal, and most convenient thing for you.

For the visa run...I agree do it as soon as possible.

You should expect transportation and hotel to be paid for by your employer.

The visa fee will most likely come out of your pocket as it would have had you processed your visa back home prior to coming over so don't expect the school to pay for it.

You need your visa to work legally so don't listen if your school says you can work for a while and then get your visa. You have the right to refuse working until you have your visa because that would mean you doing something illegal.

Thanx all for your info and posts...turns out we will be getting them in the states after all, talk of immediately going to Osaka if all else fails, time constraints were the most common excuse used for possibility of doing the run....they look like theyre willing to wait to get things done properly....thanx for all the info...we stalled em good till they gave in...got a nice contract offer to work in Gumi so we will see you in a few weeks!!!
