Hey, I'm new to the forum and wanted to ask ya'll a question. I've read that Gyopos can get F-4 visas and that this qualifies them to teach privately legally in Korea. If this is true I'm wondering if qualify as a Gyopo. I've been described by that term by some and others have said I'm not--I was born in America and my Dad's American, but my Mom's Korean. So I'm a mixed-blood or "Hon Hyul". Anyways, I wanted to check and see if anyone knows anything about it and also if anyone has any general advice for how I can best work in Korea, given my background, I'd appreciate it.

BTW-I'm graduating from a top 5 public university, I've had various teaching jobs, I've taught english classes in Korea as volunteer work before, I'm currently tutoring Korean kids here in America, and I speak decent Korean (although from what I've read and heard this isn't too big a factor).

Anyways, I'd really appreciate any advice and thoughts from the board.

Thanks

Whoops, sorry I didn't read the sticky about visa questions. But I'd still be very interested in any advice you have for job searching and what I should expect.

Thanks Again

I can't tell you about the gyopo status, but if you are a) graduating from a well-known university and b) speak 'decent' Korean, you may have the makings for a very well-paying job in a chaebol or international company. With your experience teaching, think about universities.

With the current heightened awareness of mixed ethnicities brought about by Ward Hines and Daniel Henney, you might want to mention them in your cover letter. Very Happy

Good luck.

Hey, thanks for the replies. And yes...I am Hines Ward. After conquering the NFL with my performance last Super Bowl I've set my sights on conquering the job market in Korea. Sure there'll be a big pay cut....but everything's cheap over there anyway!

Ya-ta boy, when you say join a company do you mean taking on an office job? And what's the best way to get in with a Univ? From what I've read it's hard to find, apply, and get accepted for those. Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions.

Yours Truly,
Hiney

Damn. I was hoping you were Daniel Henney. *drool* Smile
If you're F-4, you could tutor legally but some schools can fire you if they say you can't teach outside of their school.. I've known plenty of teachers that did it w/o anyone finding out but you didn't hear that from me.

And, guy up there is right. If you've got exp, you can apply for univ, business, or other non-teaching jobs.

Good luck Daniel..... Mad

Umm....now I don't know if I want to be Hines or Daniel....Hines or Daniel!!?! I'm so torn!!!

Now I don't know if I want to teach english or join the corporate ladder....teach or become assimilated...!?!?! augh!!!

I'm actually only going to be working over there for a year before law school so unless I can get a nice paying corporate job for just a year that might not be the best option for me. Do they have those kind of jobs? And if I wanted to teach University what's the best way for me to set that up while I'm here in America?

Thanks,
Daniel Ward

Dear Hiney,

I wasn't thinking of an office job so much as a company job doing translations, proofreading/writing, head hunting, and other personnel work that puts your bilingualism to use.

Can't tell you how to go about finding that kind of work. Maybe a recruiter could tell you? Or hang around this site until a gyopo shows up who has some direct knowledge. There is also a mixed blood blogger, metropolitician.blogs.com who might have some ideas if you contacted him. (He writes really well, too.)

As for a uni job, I would guess you just apply and emphasize your particular qualities.

Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

A Korean American friend graduated from Dartmouth. She worked at a school that had only Ivy league grads as teachers. I'm not sure if it still exists but sounded like a good gig.
