to those with kids here..would you have information on daycares for children between the ages of 1 and 4?

My wife and I are thinking of this option for our son and I was wondering if any of you have info as to price and availability here in Korea.

As far as I know there are basically three types of places to send your kid:
ġ, ̹, or . The first is most like a kindergarten, I think. Where they would actually spend structured time teaching the kids stuff. Then a ̹ might tend to be a smaller place with a quieter environment, for babies and younger ones, and where there'd be a better provider/child ratio. A lot of them seem to run out of people's apartments, like an in-home daycare. s seem to get quite big enrollment-wise and have the upper age range of kids. (These are just my experiences/opinions though and shouldn't be taken as gospel.) As far as availability, all three of these seem to be all over the place in Korea. I'd say the important thing is checking them out in person to make sure they meet with your standards. It's not at all legislated the way things of this nature are in the West.

If you're looking for a center, they're called . In Gyeonggi, they run about 200,000won/month plus about 100,000 one time registration fee, 75,000won/month lunch, 25,000won/month supplies. And the tuition is for about 9-2pm. If you want your child to stay longer (5pm or so) tack on another maybe 5-70,000won. These are all approximate prices of course.

A good way to find them is to walk around apartment complexes. There are quite a few around if you look for them.

Our daughter has attended a nursery school for the past year (she'll be 2 years, 7 months-old this March), and it's been great. She absolutely loves it there. She's there from 9:30am to 1:30pm, does arts&crafts, sings songs, has lunch, plays, exercises, and has story time -- all for 200,000 won/month. There's a shuttle bus, too, but since we live only a block away, I or the wife (or us both) walk the little girl there.

She's going to attend a new nursery school starting next week, because the tuition is the same and the new school offers English classes (and other extracurricular activities) twice a week. English is going to be taught starting in the 1st grade come 2008, so nursery schools these days are becoming ultra competitive and offering more and more.

Homeboy, enroll your son with no hesitation. Don't hesitate to PM me if you have further questions.

Price varies on the age of the kid and your income. I'm guessing you aren't flat broke, so you should expect to pay 300000 per month if you kid is under two, less if he or she is over two.

My daughter has attended to different ̹s. We pulled her out of the first one after a few months 'cause she really didn't want to go. when she started going to the second one she really enjoyed it.

The woman running the show is fully licenced and periodically attends workshops on improving her programs etc. She has a maximum enrollment of 15 kids. There are 3 full-time teachers and one part-time so the ratio of kids to teachers is great.

For the past year, my daughter turns 4 today, she has been learning how to write Korean and doing simple crafts that she really enjoys. From next week my daughter will be switching to a government recognized ġ, which is really a kindergarten - no kids under 4 (western age) where she will go for 2 years before starting elementary school.

ġ ,  I dont think they take children under 4..

̹ is probably your best bet.. you know the first floor of apartments where a teacher has set up a day care! look around your apartment area.
goverments also have sponsored places, check with your Dong office to see where they are! its like back home.. you need to check around for the best one, the one that makes you feel comfortable and your daughter!
I walked into one place with my daughter 5 years ago, and I saw this older kid about 8 years old, probably the owners kid, he just walked up to one of the young boys about 4 or 5 and slapped him across the head!
I just got up and we walked out! you need to look into the eyes of the owner and try to see what kind of person she is! she just after your money! or they actually teach.. the houses can be good, small and more attention, and a good way to break the kids in.. and get the ready for a bigger school when they are about 4..

you need to shop around! you are leaving your child in someone elses care!!!
