This from Wikipedia:

Quote:
Silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable and chemically unreactive.

So why does it say "DO NOT EAT!" on the packet? Should I eat some and see what happens?

I'll try it and you try it and then we'll compare notes. I'm trying it right...now. Did you? Get back to me on how it goes.

Pretty funny observation, though.

There are many reasons for not eating something. For example, steel is not toxic. Neither is normal plastic. Doesn't mean you should eat it. Some things which may temptingly look like candy are labeled "do not eat" to make it clear that it is not food. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's toxic.

It's non-toxic because it is chemically unreactive.

Glass is chemically unreactive as well. Doesn't mean you'll enjoy eating it

Noted. But why the stern "DO NOT EAT!" warning? If it's non-toxic, it isn't really necessary, is it? Plus, what kind of idiot would I have to be to think that a packet of candy was boxed in with my new pair of Converse?

Furthermore, should the thin paperboard included inside the wrapping of some chocolate bars contain a similar warning?

There was a package of silicon stuff in the salad I got from Carrefour. I guess if you didn't look, it wouldn't seem unreasonable for it to be some kind of topping. I'm not really sure why it was in with my salad, but then, I don't know what that stuff is for anyway.

Wait a minute... You mean those little bitty gauze pouches that you find at the bottom of, say, serving-size packets of kim and other foods? And they're, like, difficult as *beep* to rip open? But when you do, there's all these cool glass bead-type thingies in them? Yeah, that stuff's great. I'm pretty sure that's sugar they just, you know, have laying around, and they dole it out like prizes for buying their product. Been mixing it in my coffee for years.

Okay, okay, that's not true. I was just kidding. I've been mixing it in _your_ coffee for years.

The sad part is, is that they wouldn't put the warning there if some idiot hadn't already done it.
