I am thinking about getting out of my contract with a public school at the end of June, which will be at the 10th month. I want to get out of the contract then because of some personal things I need to take care of at home and also have time to pursue another job prospect elsewhere in Asia.

So how does one go about doing this? I know that I am supposed to give a one month notice, which I plan to do, but I was looking more for advice on how to explain myself to my Principal and coworkers. How does one handle this situation delicately with Koreans?

You will lose your severance and return airfare. Nothing can be so important that you will lose 5 million won (aprox) happily. I would think about what you are doing....

I agree. Leaving at the tenth month doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do. What's another two months? You stand to lose a lot of cash. Also not completing a contract hurts your reputation if you ever want to return.

If you have another job prospect, explain the situation to your new employer. I'm sure they'll understand. If you're willing to put your personal problems on hold until June, they can't be too big of a deal.

If you really must leave, then I'd suggest giving them adequate notice and a good explanation of the reasons for your early departure. If they've been good to you during the last ten months then I'd also suggest an apology might go some way to softening the blow.
Don't forget that when you signed the contract you were committing yourself to a full year.
Good luck!

Give advance notice and it should be no problem. The end of June would be a good time to leave a public school job, though if you could at least stick it out until the end of the semester that would be idea.

Be a professional about it.

Give notice and explain why (you have valid reasons here).

I agree about the income thing being mentionned here. at the 10th month, you stand to lose quite a bit. Is the other job oppotunity time sensitive (i.e. does it start before you end your current contract)?

As for those personal things to take care of...are they urgent?

You are talking about roughly 6-7 million won here ( pay for month 11 & 12 (I assume you are making 2 million) + severance (another months pay) + airfare....think about that
