First take your glass and examine
the wine against the light. You're
looking at color and clarity.
JACK
What color is it supposed to be?
MILES
Depends on the varietal. Just get a
sense of it. Thick? Thin? Watery?
Syrupy? Inky? Amber, whatever...
JACK
Huh.
MILES
Now tip it. What you're doing here
is checking for color density as it
thins toward the rim. Tells you how
old it is, among other things, usually
more important with reds. This is a
very young wine, so it's going to
retain its color pretty solidly. Now
stick your nose in it.
Jack waves the glass under his nose as if it were a perfume
bottle.
MILES
Don't be shy. Get your nose in there.
Jack now buries his nose in the glass.
MILES
What do you smell?
JACK
I don't know. Wine? Fermented grapes?
Miles smells.
MILES
There's not much there yet, but you
can still find...
(more sniffs)
...a little citrus... maybe some
strawberry... passion fruit... and
there's even a hint of like
asparagus... or like a nutty Edam
cheese.
Jack smells again and begins to brighten.
JACK
Huh. Maybe a little strawberry. Yeah,
strawberry. I'm not so sure about
the cheese.
MILES
Now set your glass down and get some
air into it.
Miles expertly swirls the wine. Jack follows suit.
MILES
Oxygenating it opens it up, unlocks
the aroma and the flavors. Very
important. Now we smell again.
They do so. Jack smiles.
MILES
That's what you do with every one.
JACK
When do we get to drink it?
MILES
Now.
Jack gulps his wine down in one shot. Miles chews his before
swallowing.

POURER
About four weeks.
MILES
Huh. That explains all the tannins.
And how long in oak?
POURER
About a year.
MILES
French or American?
POURER
Both.
MILES
Good stuff.
JACK
Yeah, oak. That's a good wood.

Wal-Mart in Daegu (Sung-seo) has Santa Julia Malbec (actually a Malbec blend) in gift boxes -- two bottles for 9,000 Won. I used to drink Malbec when I lived in Argentina. Great with meat or pasta, and the usual price is 9,000 for one bottle.
My Malbec of choice is Trapiche, which is available now at the Homeplus. Considerably more expensive that the Wal-Mart deal.

No guarantees, but the Hyatt Deli, at the Hyatt and Galleria have and extensive selection of Wolf Blass wines.
I've never noticed "grey label", in fact, I didn't even know that it existed, but you can most likely call them to find out if it's available. |

Went to Galleria in Suwon today and man....what a shi$$y selection of wine.
Crossed the road to HomePlus and found that HP now has a 'Wine of the Month' thing happening.
Just bought (and drank one bottle) two bottle fo South Africa's finest.
A bottle of Millstream cinsault and a bottle of merlot for 11,000 won.
I have to say I am surprised at the quality.
Yeah I'm drunk....but damn is it it ever not tasty. |

I think the name of the sticky above, "Restaurants/Cafes/Eateries," will be changed soon so as to become broader and more inclusive (upon which I would add this information to it).

The best wine you can get is Yellowtail Shiraz. I don't know why it is so available in Korea (maybe because it is good and cheap) but I was surprised to see it surface here in such a big way (you can even get it at some 7-11s and Walmart). 13,000 a bottle, and the best I've had for the price!  |
