Hey Folks,
Is it possible to get anti-depressants in Korea? And if so, how does one go about it? Visit a Korean Doc first, get a prescription? Us a Doc note from home? And also, is there a real negative stigma attached to the use of anti-depressants? Could my school found out and use it against me somehow? Thanks, any insight wold be great. |

this topic has been covered many, many times. do a simple search
but yes, you can get anti-depressants
and some koreans have a negative feeling towards them. for example, my korean friend who helped me to get mine told the pharmacist who was filling my prescription that it was for weight loss (wtf) so that they wouldn't know I was depressed. uhhh yea...
anyways.
yes, you can get them here. i had no problem at all. |

Seoul National Hospital International Clinic
Dr. Loo
(02)2072-2890
The Psychiatrist at the Itaewon International Clinic I hear is also good.
There are some people who just don't understand that chemicals in the brain may go off balance in some people. There is no one to blame, there is no shame, it's just the way it is. Thank god we live in an age where it can be treated.
(FWIW Prozac is used by many for weight loss.) |

Yes, the doctor at the International Clinic in Itaewon gives out anti-depressants like they are candy. Expensive candy. He charges a lot for them, but they are easy to get, if you need them. He is psychatrist, and more than just a regular doctor.
Try other places, but if you can\'t find anything else, go there.
Regular exercise (40 minutes at least 3 times per week) will also do a great deal to balance you out. |

I've been wondering about the price of certain antidepressants in Seoul, and whether it would be cheaper than buying them in Canada instead. I'm wondering about venlafaxine in particular. |

I really like to know what natural alternatives you have found. I'm sick of being depressed but I also hate some of the negative side-effects you can get from taking anti-depressants so i'd be keen on trying some more natural forms. |

There is a natural alternative called, SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine). 400 mg per day may help you with mild to moderate depression (NOT bipolar disorder). A month's supply costs around 35 USD, but it's not available in Korea (maybe on a US military base if you have connections). However, it can be ordered online and shipped here. |

In the past I went to a (some type of clinic) and got the presciption easily and fast. Without insurance it was 11,000 to see the doctor. You might need a little Korean, or maybe not. The meds I use (zoloft) aren't that expensive. I assume other SSRIs cost about the same. |

I use three alternatives..
5-HTP = Hydroxy Tryptophan = Helps me sleep. Expensive around 27 dollars a bottle. (Not really needed if you sleep well)
Vitamin B, B12 complex. (Cheap brain food)
empower plus = Special Minerals. This stuff really levels me out. (I am one of the lucky ones that has a brain that sucks up certain minerals) Its expensive 100 dollars a bottle but its a big bottle. One side effect, if you don't take these after eating you might vomit. When you start out you take 3 pills every 4 times a day, after about 2 months you can scale down. The company that provides them are awsome, they call me and ask me what my doses are, they check up on me and other good customer care things. |

How did you find out about the minerals you needed?
Also jajdude, are the pills you take less than $1 per day? |

I dug this up because all the advice I've seen through 9 years in-country has led to Seoul.
I'm in Suwon, and getting treatment at Ajou University Hospital. Top-notch state-of-the-art hospital. As far as I've seen, all doctors and most staff speak English.
They just prescribed me Xanax, Escitaopram, and Naltrexone.
I'm planning my escape back to the world and am having anxiety about it.
And I worry about DTs getting off soju.
If in Suwon, this is the place to go. |
