It is also a tribute to Al Jazeera for letting her express her views. It is probably the most open station in the ME (as far as I know, which concerning the ME isn't much) |

And if she - or her Arabic family - had not been allowed to emigrate to the U.S. what are the chances that she could developed these convictions rooted in freedom and the professional stature to credibly voice them on TV? (Probably, as an Arab-American with global contacts, all of her international communications are being monitored by Homeland Insecurity...) |

a slam-dunk for sanity. I just think of all of the woman and girls (and men too) who were watching this, dumbfounded by her american audacity...beautiful
this gives me hope for not just al-jazeerah, but the entire region.
have a feeling people (especially historians) will be watching this clip for centuries to come. dare we dream of a day when a university or high school is named after this amazingly brave woman? let's say somewhere in Mecca? |

Well to throw in another pessimistic view:
her POV will be dismissed because:
1. She's a woman
2. She's an American |

If I had grown up under the jackboot of the mullahs and their more repressive forms of Islam ie: stonings and "honour" killings of my sistahs in the name of god, I'd have had my fill of religion and become an atheist too. |

that's besides the point. In Muslims' eyes, an athiest is the worst type of human there is. |

I don't agree that her being American will discredit her. I have some experience living in the "muslim world", and I found that they - and especially my arab students - generally respected the USA even despite their feelings of anger towards Bush or foreign policy. In my experience, the Arabs (much more than other muslims I worked with) were very willing to consider the views of Americans, even over and above most other non-islamic opinions. |
