| Are all whales endangered? Eating endangered animals is wrong and stupid! No offence to those of you who have tried it. Extinction is not a constructive option for the balance of our world. there are plenty of other animals.. too many farm animals for example. Eat those instead! |

I'm all for ramming my values down other people's throats. I would hope that I would have the opportunity to whap somebody with a shovel if they were eating whale meat in front of me. Hence I don't really go to Japan very much.

I ate seal in Newfoundland a few times. Tasted like fat and gave me the trots. I doubt whale would be much better. Do we need more reasons not to support this industry?

Yep. Every time.
But it's worth it. |

| Anyone who would eat an endangered species should be taken out of the gene pool. There are far too many other things to eat than to intentionally eat an animal that has been driven to the brink of extinction by the actions of man. An individual that would further exacerbate the situation deserves no less than the same treatment his/herself. Period!!! |

no, absolutely not.
it's illegal and it should remain that way
(i tell Koreans that the japanese are vilified the world over for whale hunting and, of course, koreans don't want to be like the japanese, do they? it shuts them up right quick )
many species of whales are smarter than most primates
(though even some westerners are dumb enough to think dolphins are fish) |

| I would try it as long as it's not from a species facing extinction. |

Wretched Japanese have just increased their quotas too..Minkes and humpbacks..although they are now catching more than anybody cares to eat, and are selling their stockpiles as petfood!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11258464/
"But the glut of whale meat hasnt stopped the harpoon guns. Tokyo plans to kill — under a research program — some 1,070 minke whales in 2006, over 400 more than last year. Japan will also hunt 10 fin whales, and a total of 160 Brydes, sei and sperm whales, fisheries official Kenji Masuda said." |

Get down from your cross, we need firewood.
I've tasted it, served up as a sidedishee in a raw fish restaurant. But I didn't order it, they just served it. It has a stong taste and a lot of fat/blubber.
There's a fish market in Pohang where they sell huge chunks of the stuff. |

I'd have no qualms about eating whalemeat if there was enough of them, and the hunt was properly managed not to harm the last remaining populations- let alone the continual depleting of them by the accursed driftnets.
-But the populations are not recovering properly! What is needed is to find a proper way to clamp down on the japanese for their needless overkill and the Koreans for their miles of useless driftnets. If stocks recover to sustainable level then we can consider controlled hunting- although there really isn't a need to eat whales!
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/japan-doubles-whale-quota
"Let's just remember here that populations of whales in the Antarctic are at only 10 percent of what they were before industrial whaling.
Even worse for these whales: scientists believe that the Korean population of minke whales is in serious decline. Research published by the well-respected Royal Society shows not only that minke whales in Japanese and Korean waters are declining; but that they will continue to decline even if hunting does not resume, due to these high levels of "accidental" bycatch - and the IWC scientists agree."
i've been lucky enough to see humpbacks breaching off australia- came so close they covered us with spray. Awesome moment! And also 2 minkes off the coast of korea.
