The guy speaks Persian , Urdu, English and one other language. How did he get such skills at such a young age? From what I have heard the guy is very smart.

It's a matter of education and the milieu in which one is raised. For example, my two-year-old speaks 3 languages. Besides, as someone who's 'smart' enough to speak 4 languages, I don't see how that could excuse the fact he is/was a Taliban.

People change , he was very young when he was a Taliban.

So was John Walker Lindth, and yet he's still in prison. Ironic, no?

there are some differences , but more than that is that this guy that could be useful to the US.

wouldn't his case be similar to that the of a Soviet defector?

Apple and oranges.

anyway for the record John Walker Lindth is a fool, not a terrorist. He isn't a threat and probably ought not be in Jail. To my knowlege he wasn't member of Al Qaida , he never killed anyone, never was involved in terrorism and didn't do anything except march around with the Talbian.

He probably wouldn't be very useful to the US. The guy studying at Yale would be.

Actually, he is useful to the US for propaganda purposes. That's why he's in prison.

First and foremost Lindh clearly lacks the proper ( if in fact any ) political connexions.

As has long been the case with old man aka "Poppy" Bush, he too must have "known the General" ... Twisted Evil

More like taking out the frustrations for 9-11 , not propaganda.

That's only partly true. He got a harsh sentence because the US government wanted to give out a message that it was hard on terrorism (ie. propaganda). Of course, they were also testing the grounds to see how much they could get away with.

Well he got the *beep* kicked out of him and went through some pretty rough treatment when he was captured by the american forces. His dad has written a book about the whole episode but won't ever get it published for a myriad of reasons.

Nope, I wasn't saying that at all. My point was I think the guy has been punished more than warranted.

He was a dumb ass, no more, no less.

And no, he did not join an organization that was dedicated to the overthrow of the United States. The taliban might have welcomed Osama Bin Laden and agreed with his point of view, but the United States ( nor any other country beyond perhaps Saudi and Pakistan) was not its major focus.

one of them being that his son had joined an organization dedicated to the overthrow or destruction of the United States, not unlike Timothy McVeigh.

Al Qaida is dedicated to the destruction of the US

with all due respect , I don't think he was a member of Al Qaida.

I am sure there are many in the Taliban that would like to see the US destroyed - they are not nice people , but I don't think the organziaton was dedicated to the destruction of the US - at least it doesn't seem that it was their goal when Walker Lindh joined them.

Joo and Hollywood: how can you claim to speak so authoritatively on the U.S. govt's motives in the Lindh case?

If you have some specific evidence to cite, then please cite it. If you are just speculating, based at least partly on your preexisting views and opinions on the U.S. govt, then admit this.

I was just speculating, I really don't know all the details of the case sorry for not saying so before.

As for me I support the US govt , but in this case I am not sure the punishment fits the crime.

Quote:
John Phillip Walker Lindh (born February 9, 1981) is an American citizen of European heritage who was captured in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom while fighting for the Taliban [that is, fighting against the United States]. His capture made worldwide headlines, and the media dubbed him the "American Taliban."

...Walker was first captured on November 25, 2001, by Northern Alliance forces and questioned by CIA agent Mike Spann and another agent at a prison near Mazar-e Sharif. Later that day, the prison was the scene of a violent uprising, in which Spann was killed along with hundreds of Taliban fighters. Walker took refuge in a basement bunker after taking a bullet in the upper-right thigh, hiding with other Taliban members. He was found seven days later on December 2, 2001, when Northern Alliance forces diverted an irrigation stream, flushing out Walker and the other survivors. Walker initially gave his name as "Abdul Hamid" but later gave his real name.

Upon capture, Walker signed confession documents while he was held by the United States Marine Corps on USS Peleliu and informed his interrogators that he was not merely Taliban but al Qaeda.

...On February 5, 2002, Walker was indicted by a federal grand jury on ten charges, including conspiring to support terrorist organizations and conspiring to murder Americans. The charges carry three life terms and 90 additional years in prison. On February 13, 2002, he pleaded "not guilty" to all ten charges.

...On July 15, 2002, Walker pled guilty to two charges serving in the Taliban army and carrying weapons. The judge asked Walker to say, in his own words, what he was admitting to. "I plead guilty," he said. "I provided my services as a soldier to the Taliban last year from about August to December. In the course of doing so, I carried a rifle and two grenades. I did so knowingly and willingly knowing that it was illegal."

JOHN FUND ON THE TRAIL

Ivory Tower Stonewall
A 9/11 survivor asks Yale to explain why it admitted the Taliban Man.

Monday, April 3, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT

Katherine Bailey and her sister, Margaret Pothier, have a BONE to pick with Yale President Richard Levin over his university's admission of a former Taliban official as a student. Mrs. Bailey lost her husband, Garnet "Ace" Bailey, on 9/11. Mr. Bailey, a hockey scout and former Boston Bruins star, was a passenger on United flight 175 when it slammed into the second World Trade Center tower.
