I started doing pushups a couple of months ago and already noticed some improvements in definition in my arms, but I'm wondering if I'd get considerable more benefits using my dumbbells.

The last few days I started doing some bicep curls as well as pushups, but basically I am confused as to how the get the best results with the equipment I have.

Any advice much apreciated

I think pushup basically suck as an exercise. Go to the gym, do a few sets of benchpresses, and notice how you can barely life your arms the next day. that's good exercise.

but that's just my opinion, not advice. I'll give you one peice of advice: don't take look for exercise advice on dave's esl cafe. it's even worse than the legal advice.

Long answer: You've got more options with dumbbells; you can use different moves to isolate your shoulders, back, biceps and triceps. Push-ups are great as an overall exercise, since they use your arms, chest, back and abs at the same time, but when one of those groups gets tired out, you have to quit before the other groups get the attention they need.

Short answer: both.

Push-ups, done right, is a great exercise that works many muscle groups, even in the back, hip and abdominal areas. Improves balance and posture too.

A highly underappreciated exercise.

I do my pushups with my feet raised on a chair/bed/couch....... Gives more bang for the buck. but the point is that (with any exercise), you got to change it up in many ways or you don't get much out of it after the first while......

So dumbells some days, pushups others, also dips are cool (feet up on one chair. arms on another, down/up , down/ up..

Best exercise though is the damn burpee.......kills even the best of athletes.....

For biceps, do concentration curls with the dumbells, curls on an incline bench, and supinated curls. 3 sets of 8-12 reps for each exercise is a decent workout for beginning/intermediate lifters.

Save the pushups for warmpus or for the very end of your workout. If you do them at the end, always go to failure. It's a great way to finish, and you'll get a great burn.

Huh?? Kinda depends on what you want, no? Did 200 pushups a day for years in JH and HS and ended up with a bigger chest than many of the girls. All depends on what you want. To get greater size and over a wide variety of muscle groups do various kinds of pushups. E.g., incline (feet raised to get focus on upper chest), arms wide (muscle nearer the shoulder, more evenly distributed size), hands placed in line with the head (again, upper chest), etc.

However, pushups are NOT a power building exercise, they are a body building one. You want shape and size, do the pushups. Want strength, hit the weights. Want both...

I only do one-arm, knuckle, Russian push-ups. Maybe five reps of twenty for each arm.

I do balance against the wall however for the arm-stand, so I guess that's sort of weak.

I love lifting weights, but there are a couple of considerations you have to factor in:

- It's easy to have bad form if you don't know what you're doing. Bad form = less progress and greater chance of injury (although your chances of injuring yourself by doing curls wrong is pretty low).

- If you want to get bigger, you have to keep upping the weight, which means you'll have to buy the equipment and find a place to store it.

spliff: 300 pushups a day? Props!
