[SPINOZA]

An average, nothing-special suburb of Seoul. As you can clearly see, the streets and sidewalks are literally awash with trash and litter. And look at those unsightly properties next to those mountains. Who'd want to live in THAT?



No shortage of general filth here either.



Here we go...City Hall area, downtown Seoul. This must've been a good day because usually there's a huge trash dump there. The Koreans just dump all their trash unashamedly in a busy part of town. Namsan is barely visible in the background too thanks to all the air pollution.





This curious building has even turned into a funny shape, thanks to excessive levels of toxic gases in the atmosphere. I suspect the trash dump near City Hall has something to do with it!



A public school in Seoul. Jeez, what a dump! This picture just SCREAMS air pollution, trash, litter flying everywhere, all manner of Korean foulness! Who'd want to work in an environment like this? Beats me.



The Moon in a Seoul late-winter evening - barely visible, as beneath it is clearly an ocean of brown smog.




The bits of green, brown and orange on this little building are pollution stains. How disgusting!



Pollution stains aplenty on these buildings in downtown Seoul. I could hardly breathe in that air as I took the pic!



If all the above wasn't enough, look at this for degradation and general uncleanliness!

Dear Spinoza,

Don't take this the wrong way just a little something I noticed.

I am assuming that you posted this thread in response to some of the posts that can be found on the thread entitiled "Incheon named worlds best airport".


The second poster on that thread stated that if only the rest of KOREA was as marvelous as the first place you step in when you come here....(meaning dirty)


Shortly thereafter ajgeddes provided a similar post, A little decieving because when you get into the COUNTRY its a completely different story...


Then you quote ajgeddes..........and say this...

I assume where you come from is a pristine squeeky-clean paradise if you think Korea's dirty. Where is all this filth in Korea? I've never seen any, apart from that created by wakguks in Hongdae at weekend. The bus ride from Incheon airport to Seoul is really nice and I've seen significantly dirtier places than Seoul, so what are you talking about?


I too could not believe that you do not see the filth in Korea and posted this.....

KOREA is one of the filthiest places I have ever seen. Koreans treat there COUNTRY like one big garbage dump. Look around the garbage is absolutely disgusting, go for a walk and look around on the ground.

Not sure where you live but the only places in Korea that seem to be void of an insane amount of litter are the mountains because its a spiritual place. (ADDITION, I should have said NATIONAL PARKS, not simply mountains as you notably stated 70% is mountainous)

I can take 500 steps and see at least 1000 pieces of crap lying on the ground, everything from candy wrappers, tires, fridges, couches and anything else they don't want. To me its Koreas worst attribute without a doubt.

If the government of Korea wanted to make a lot of money they should simply inact and enforce a fine for littering. Oh no wait that might make everyone in Korea poor in a matter of months.

I am not writing this message in hast however I DO THINK YOU NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE SAID, KOREA, NOT SEOUL!

I do recall that seoul was cleaner than other areas of the country however KOREA as a whole is disgustingly filthy, get out into the countryside, go to villages, small and mid size towns and you will see the filth.

when my parents came to visit last summer they remarked, "Seoul is so clean for such a big city." Yes, it is.

There are dirty areas. There are more whiners.

I wouldn't say that Seoul is the most dirty place on earth, because it isn't all that bad.

However, I will say that SPINOZA picked some well kept areas to snap with his camera and make a biased point about.

Now, my hometown is CLEAN. Very clean, except for the thugs and homeless, who are quite an eyesore...

Korea has changed in the last few years, or maybe I just don't notice it as much. No, when I think about it, Korea has changed.

It used to be a lot dirtier and a lot more different when I first came here. I am a newbie in the scheme of things. I have only been here 5 yrs and thats not much. Though if you ask others who have been here longer than me I am sure that they too have noticed a change in korea, in many different areas and rubbish collection is one of them.

Though I am still waiting for the day that rubbish bins are the norm and not the unexpected.

I think that there is a large difference between Seoul in the winter and Seoul in the summer. In the winter time, the city doesn't smell like rotten kimchi baking in a hot sun. Also, the air pollution becomes terrible in the summer months, and combined with the heat, it can turn ugly.

You've only been here for 6 months during cooler times. Wait for the summer time, and I think you'll understand why a lot of people complain about how filthy it can get.

Also, I'm guessing that a large population of teachers living here are from smaller communities, which always seem much cleaner due to less traffic and people. For me, I'm from the sticks, so Seoul seems much dirtier. You, however, are from Manchester, so the cities may be comparable in pollution (just venturing a guess here).

I wish there were more garbage cans, especially in the subway.

I used to be on a huge ice latte kick, and I often had to stick the empty cup in my purse, and then it would inevitably tip over, soaking tissues, etc. I don't drink ice lattes much anymore...

I was at Inchon a/p once waiting for the bus into the city. Some Kiwis who had never been to Korea before stepped outside the a/p, and I heard them say, "GOD, it STINKS out here" while wrinkling their noses. I almost pooed myself laughing. Funny thing is, I didn't notice any nasty stench...
