I can say, alot of Americans that stay in Korea tend to have went to Korea while in the military.

I know there is alot that is good about being out of the military (no GI parties, no curfew, no rigid code of dress ot conduct) , but there is alot of good things that people might miss after they get out (PX, commissary, free-movies,etc).

What do you miss about the military after you got out?

Wow, this is ESL cafe and yet since I was in the military-- Navy -- a long time ago, I can actually post on this one...

hmmm .... not too much to miss... I was on a ship so I guess travelling was the best part. I think people (like me) who always complain about Korea should go join the Navy and be on a ship for a couple of years to put things into perspective... 16-hour working days doing food service and other sh!t work, late night watches that break your 6 hours of sleep into two 3 hour periods, getting yelled at by people who cant count backwards from 10 to 1.

I do miss the Ocean. I miss the free AMC flights I used to get to Europe and Puerto Rico. I miss the money -- 30 grand -- I got and used to go to a good University without working while I went.

Pest 2, I think lastat06513 is referring to people who went to the military in Korea, not back home. Maybe you are too VOCAL as someone has pointed out...

Being in the best shape of my life.
Plus shooting at stuff was fun too;

The most comfortable sleeping position ever...
prone behind a squad automatic machine gun.

Yeah, shooting the machine gun was strangely soothing...and so was having a finger on the trigger of this toy.

I like to say I was trained to play video games.

Well, when you ask your friends what did you do this summer and they tell you about how they hated their jobs etc etc. They ask you and I say I got paid to drive around off-road and shoot machine guns. Not a bad summer job to be honest..

I dearly miss the comradarie of fellow losers. I miss my old friends. I miss being drunk 7 nights a week. I miss the Sea Bees. I miss my boat that looked like an ugly ugly yacht. I miss LA. I miss surfing and hobie sailing. I miss the Baja peninsula. I miss the firing off large deisel engines. I miss running the generators. I miss the times when I, the boat's engineer, was called out of bed to tie knots the deck apes could not. I miss chipping paint, paint chips and chipped paint. I miss vast fields of rust. I miss gray paint. I miss the 3 roll overs of our pickup truck as it rolled down a lovely Malibu canyon road after an afternoon of heavy drinking and fist fighting. I miss the excitement of being in the back of the truck when it rolled. I miss my valley girl girl friends. I miss the salt aire. I miss being being at sea with no land for 300 miles in any direction. I miss captians mast and the subsequent head shaving that inspired a dozen other miscreants to shave thier head as well that in turn inspired an NIS investiagtion for "Skin Head Activity". I miss slam dancing at punk bars in Hollywood when my head was shaved. I miss this

Quote:

1. General Quarters - "This is not a drill, this is not a drill, General Quarters, General Quarters! All hands man your battlestations.....

2. Sweepers - "Sweepers, Sweepers, man your brooms. Sweep down all decks fore and aft. Sweep all passageways, ladderwells, and ......Take all trash to the fantail. Now sweepers."

I miss the glow in the dark algea and how it illuminated the entire food chain in the props wake. I miss the ricey-ricey food the Pinoy cooks used to make. I miss changing light bulbs on the mast and fore structure. I miss tossing trash of the fan tail. I miss catching fish at 300 feet and having them explode when they came to the surface. I miss Anacapa island.

Well I don't really miss all these things, but I rememeber them fondly. Mostly, I miss the years I wasted in military. Never Again Volunteer Yourself.

I was never in the military, but one reason to miss it would be the amount of leave you'd get. I'd conquer a foreign country if it meant I'd get a couple weeks extra off per year.

Canadian soldiers do get lots of days off (can't remember if it's 12 or 14 days off per month). The hours aren't too bad either if you aren't on a call out. Sign up with the reserves when you return to Canada if you're interested. Unless it's changed since I served, they won't send you on peace keeping missions unless you volunteer. You can also quit any time you like.

Oh man! I totally forgot about sweepers! I got this, like, warm glowy feeling all over my body when I read that. When did you have to go to GQ when it wasn't a drill? We only had that circumstance a few times during a med cruise...

How 'bout, "This is the captain speaking.... that is all." Or, "mail buoy watch on the focsle" haha.

That's rather insulting, considering the subject of this thread. I joined for altruistic motives, to participate in peacekeeping missions. What concrete steps have you taken to promote world peace?
