While renewing my passport I noticed a disclaimer that states, roughly, that a person may have to wait for 6 months from the time of their passport renewal before they can leave Korea. True? False? Any experiences? |

Could it depend on your country of origin?
When I got my passport renewed, I just sent in the old one and got a new one. No hassles, no problems, no delays. No nothing.
It sounds pretty strange...6 months? Why? Maybe a misunderstanding. Could they have meant they're sending you to the pokey for 6 months and you can't leave the country till you serve your time? |

God I hope not! I like rice and kimchi as much as the next guy, but.....
No, what I meant is that the Korean government will not let you out of the country if you have renewed your passport within the past six months. That's what the U.S. embassy website states. |

But I'm from UK.

I heard of no such nonsense when I got my (Canadian) passport renewed in Seoul. |

Are you sure it's not the other way around...i.e. they won't let you in the country unless you have at least six months left on your passport? That's how it usually works. |

Thats nonsense -- a new passport is good to go the day you get it.
But yeh, some countries wont let you in with less than 6 months left on an old passport. |

I left less than 2 months after I renewed mine, and I'm American. Don't worry. |

You say the U.S. embassy website states this. Will you please post a link to this statement?

Been there, done that
I'm sure you won't face any problems. My passport broke down four days before I had to get the h**l out of Dodge! My visa was about to expire and I found out that my passport was in two pieces. (-.-);; My embassy gave me a new one the previous day I had to leave... no problems what-so-ever! So don't worry! |

A semi related question.
I have to fly back to the UK at the end of this week as my grandmother passed away and i'm going to attend her funeral.
I have a multiple re entry visa and will be flying back in on a one way ticket a few days later, i have an E2 visa so i'm persuming they will let me do this. But the main query is that my passport expires in july this year, does anyone imagine i'm going to have a big problem with this??
My reentry visa states that it's 'Good for multiple reentry into korea until November 14 2006 if this passport remains valid'. Surely i should be ok reentering the cou ntry with this then??
Any help greatly appreciated. |

You should have no problem. Of course, you will need to get a new passport here in July and have the visa transferred. |

Many countries, including Korea, require passports to be valid for at least six months for exit and entry. |
Hah! This was copied straight off the U.S. embassy website! Note that exit part! |

What that meams is that your visa must not expire within the next 6 months or you may be denied exit or entry to some counties.
That is pretty much the standard for international travel although a few countries will allow you to travel to them with as little as 30 days validity remaining on your passport. |
