Spring is here and the days of heat and humidity are approaching fast. Ugh.

I have a friend whose brother-in-law installs air conditioners--and I can get a discount). Neither of them speaks much air con English. I would like some advice about the best type to buy. I'm inclined to get one of those tall, free-standing units (no idea what they are really called).

Anyone have one of those? Where does the water go? Would I need to keep a bucket next to it?

I don't know if I will stay here for another year or not. Greener pastures in a bigger town are calling me. How much hassle is it to have a wall-mounted air con moved?

Any words of wisdom on this topic would be highly appreciated.

I've got one of those nearly fridge sixed units, and it's great. there's a pipe that runs out of my apartment so the water drips from there. It;s a little hard to explain since I'm not looking at it, but I'll post a pic tonight if you like.

a pic would be nice, thanks.

Did they drill a hole in the wall to run the pipe out? I was hoping to avoid doing that, since I only rent. There's something about leaving a gaping hole in the wall that doesn't sit well with me. Call me old-fashioned.

They do, ya-ta boy. That's the only way. It doesn't matter which type you use, wall mount or free standing, they have to drill a hole in the wall.

Basically, the free standing ones (and the new wall mount type) come in 2 separate unit. The actual air-con and the fan. The fan goes outside to the balcony to release hot air, while you are inside enjoying the cool air.

I don't think you need to worry about drilling a hole in the wall - nowadays people expect it, really.

Not really a response to your question, ya-ta, just a word to the wise; I used my unit quite a lot, and one month got an electric bill of over 400,000! Seems there's a huge surcharge for use over a certain amount, so do be careful!
