This thread has certainly blown a whole lotta smoke up a dead horses @ss, as we'd say out west.
In fact, this burning issue has made the headlines around the world:

Itaewonguy strangely missing from thread. Most likely attacked by a bunch of little street terrorists screaming 'Hi!' at him.

Korean teens won't be allowed to visit the upcoming world cup as they have been deemed to be more unruly than traditional soccer hooligans!

Burger-flippin' Frankensteins seen lumbering through the streets of South Korea terrorizing kids who say 'Hi'.

Confessions of a teenage nerd: "I never say 'Hi' to a stranger. Momma says that would be rude, mister."

Kimchi found to have unusual side effect. Makes kids greet random strangers.

Spinoza wins!

It's chaos in Seoul as crazed ESL teachers seek revenge on teenage gangs who randomly giggle and greet.

It's not a drive-by, it's a 'Hi'-by. Dangerous new trend in Seoul.

More and more out of work clowns find ESL teaching in South Korea to be a lucrative profession.

seoulkitchen, you're a good friend, but I have to disagree on this point. Only the village idiot and Walmart greeters say 'hi' to strangers outside the bounds of correct-body-language-present-okay-to-say-hi situations.

My dear man, youre talking out of your backside, its pitiful. Survey? The chances are, the folks youve spoken to are bloody halfwits!

Insulting my wife, my coworkers, and my friends in one fell swoop. Since you have demonstrated such little respect for yourself, then obviously everything I've assumed and stated about you is correct.

I hope you threw / throw a few giggles in there, too, just to make em feel more comfortable.

I call bull shit. You're walking down the street 'back home', you see some Koreans (and you can tell they're Koreans just by looking at them, too), and you call out "Anyong!" ?? Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm loving this thread since it displays the ludicrousness of the apologists' "positions":

You say "Hi" back. It's not like they're shouting "sod off."

I was used to the kids and teens saying hi in Korea, but the adults don't generally do it. When I got to Colorado, it took me a while to get used to adult strangers saying hi. People are just more friendly here. So why would I get all ginked up about that?

The point is that some expats don't believe that the kids are trying to be friendly. You may agree or not. I think some of the people who argree against the kids saying "hi" would not have a problem if the people were sincere.

And if you were French or German and the children said "hi", you might be annoyed by the fact that Koreans think that English is the language of every white person.

We must be living in a global village, the idiots are all over the world!

So I was walking in downtown Chicago the other day and some dude said 'Hi, howzzit going', so I kicked him in the nuts!

Not really, I didn't freak out. Just said hey back to him. Real easy, I just thought what a nice fella. Happened a few times there. I was in a bar and people bought me shots for no apparent reason. Several times this has happened in Norte Miguk. In Canada people are randomly friendly to me too at random places. Don't like the panhandlers tho.

the_beaver, I'm reminded of your story you posted on a thread much like this one, about the darkened doorway that you passed everyday, hearing a 'hello' coming at you. Later after much annoyance (I'm sure you were annoyed cause I know you hate to encourage those Hello Kidz) you found out it was some handicapped kid having his only moment of fun.
I'm sure you saying Hi to him made his day.

Beware of the clowns.....

well, it was childish and immature, but on the same level as the rest of the discourse around here, and dare I say, much funnier!

It was rather immature, but no surprise coming from someone who endorses a thesis as immature, adolescent and paranoid as refusing to say hi to KIDS because they're being rude. More tellingly, in posting some pics of monkeys you were posting pics of your intellectual equals.

What I said was not peurile drivel. It was a logical analysis of hi vis-a-vis anyong based on an epistemological background of Russell in the Anglo-American tradition. Having a fake degree in Everyone Hates Me And I'm a Poor Victim Studies you wouldn't know much about that kind of thing. Resorting to childish shots is an acknowledgement that you can't refute me. Someone could have a go if they wanted, but not you. You're simply not bright enough. Only a total half-wit could live in Korea for several years and think hi and anyong are equivalent. If your Korean wife says the same, then she's a quarter-wit. I suppose she'd have to be to have married you! Laughing

No, I used the formal with the ones I met in Thailand. They were right chuffed to see a whitey who can speak any Korean at all.

Think what you may, you aren't my intellectual equal, nor shall you ever be. But again, whatever lets you sleep better at night.

Everyone see how he called my wife a quarter wit? and he calls me childish. . .

This is why you aren't worth the effort, spin. Cuz you're retarded. I've already refuted you; you keep resorting to invective to prop up a none existent argument. You try to split the question into seperate parts to obfuscate the fact that you didn't understand what the rest of us were talking about until more than halfway throught the thread. This is funny:

Quote:

Now, I understand you're having fun poking at me with a sharpened stick, playing the 'ol "he's being all intellectual so let's make fun of him" schtick, but this just shows your intellectual capacity. Since you can't win or even come close to being on the same level, you resort to that crap you posted above. Ok, well, i just posted something you WOULD understand. You got the point. Good.

Yu've been Own3d, DUD!

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Spinoza: Enfant Provocateur likes to stir up trouble because...because, well...just because. This species of Flame Warrior is almost always young and male - it could be just a hormone thing. Lacks the intellectual capacity to be a serious internet warrior. Attempts to catch the unwitting in circular or tautological arguments.
