Illegal English Teachers Thriving
Seoul Immigration estimates the number of illegal foreign instructors all over the country at 30,000.

The Seoul immigration caught a Canadian "M" (26) who entered Korea with a tourist visa in 2002 and earned about 150 million won by illegal tutoring in Bucheon-city, Gyeonggi for three and a half years, and deported him on March 8. It turned out that "M", just a high school graduate, pretended that he graduated from a prestigious university in Canada and made money more than 10 million won a month at max by teaching children of an lawyer, a doctor, an Oriental doctor and so forth.... Exposed foreign instructors are either fined two million won or deported.

BOO-YAH!

However, does anyone but myself think that this number was probably inflated in order to

a) sensationalize the story?

b) create a larger amount of animosity regarding pay toward foreign teachers?

c) make the crime seem more vulgar than it really is?

d) all of the above

I'm surprised that they didn't mention that the guy was having sex with the students' mothers too.

However, in another part of the article, you read:
The instructor, who entered Korea from Canada in 2000, had been stripped of his visa on charges of sexually harassing a female student while working at two universities in Seoul in November 2005.

He was here 42 months.

He made 150 million won.

That's about 3.7 million per month, not 10 million.

3.7 would be easy doing all privates.

Good for him I hope he didn't blow it all on hooker hill.

Sorry while I see alot of people going up in arms over illegal teachers I really don't give a shit.

Good on him.

I hope he has enough cheddar saved up to set himself up in style at home.

Totally.

Take the most extreme example, paint all foreign teachers with the same brush, and you have a story you can sell.

Korean media exists, to fulfill the deepest feelings of victimhood of the Korean people.

I'm interested to know where the figure of 30000 comes from, considering there are only around 10000 legit teachers over here.

I'm wondering how Itaewonguy can possibly believe that there are 3 million illegal koreans in the United States.

It might not be that off. There are over 120,000 illegal Koreans in Canada, and that is known by both the Canadian and Korean governments. Now, if you look at it proportionately, 3 million might be a little high, but somewhere between 1 to 2 million might not be. However, i really don't have any idea what the situation is like in the USA.

100,000 illegal Koreans in Canada
... The most illegal emigrants -- nearly 183,000 -- were in the United States, followed by Canada with some 100,000.

Unforeseen dangers of Korea's Hagwon culture
In fact with the American and Canadian embassies regularly posting warnings against teaching in Korea, the number of foreign teachers in Korea has dropped from 13,000 in 1997 to 6000 in 2005.

"Illegal alien population surges since 2000
By Stephen Dinan
The Washington Times
Published March 8, 2006

WASHINGTON -- The illegal alien population in the United States is between 11.5 million and 12 million, with two-thirds having arrived in the past decade and 40 percent since 2000, a report says."

The article goes on to say that 54% of the illegals are Mexican and something like another 10% are from Latin American countries. So something like 4 million are NOT Mexican or Latin.

I doubt that 1/2 of the 'others' are Korean... Anyone got any stats on that?
