I've been to Chuncheon a few times and even climbed Samaksan.
There are public buses that go from central Chuncheon to the mountain. That's how I got there. I took a taxi back to the city afterwards. One way up is quite steep while the other is a more gradual climb. When I did it, I was not aware of the more gradual incline until I reached the top and saw the bulk of people coming up from another side. Whoops.
Unfortunately it has been 4.5 years since I did it so I have no clue what bus I took nor how much the taxi fare cost. It was only about 10 minutes from downtown though, if memory serves corectly.
As for the rest of the city, there is dalkkalbi alley in downtown. Good stuff. it's a pleasant city, one of my favorite in Korea. You might want to PM coolsage, I believe he lives there, or used to at least. |

Too bad that spring hasn't really hit here yet. It's a pleasant enough city, clean (by Korean standards), and quite scenic, surrounded on three sides by those M*A*S*H hills and on the fourth by a large artificial lake. Makes a fine weekend escape from the grimness of Seoul. The 'dakalbi street' referred to is a long pedestrian mall with a good variety of shops and restaurants, even grey-market goods that have fallen off the back of US Army trucks. A city bus will take you to the foot of the mountain, but I regret that I don't know the bus number. If you come into town by bus, there's a tourist info place up the street with English-speaking employees. They'll fix you up. Enjoy your weekend. |
