Women's Rights Leader Nominated as Prime Minister
President Roh Moo-hyun has nominated Han Myung-sook as the country's next prime minister.... Born in Pyongyang, she moved to South Korea with her family.
After a torrid four-year romance with Park Sung-jun, a professor at SungKongHoe University (formerly St. Michael's Theological Seminary), the two married,... In 1979, she was arrested.... She was released two years later.
As minister of gender equality in 2001, Han laid the legal and systematic foundation for greater women's rights by leading the revision of the Maternity Protection Law, which established paid maternity leave.

After studying French literature at Ehwa Woman's University, she earned a master's degree in theology from Hanshin University and a doctoral degree in women's studies from Ehwa.
"The appointment of a female prime minister will be historically meaningful in South Korea. It will also contribute to national harmony," Woo said.
