Last week I saw a young lesbian couple on the subway. They weren't making out or anything, but from how they interacted it was clear that they were more than just friends -- I don't mean holding hands like same-sex friends do here. They just acted like a natural couple, taking pictures together on their handphone over and over, etc. One of them was dressed androgynously (without seeing her hands it would've been possible to mistake her for a boy) and one was dressed very feminine-ly. I only noticed one disapproving look from a guy who must have been in his 60s. Anway they make a cute couple. |

yeah, ive seen that before on the subway. it was a high school couple, one was obviously very dyk-ey and the other one very girly. they were holding hands and even giving each other little pecks on the mouth. the best part was that I was with another korean teacher who just about sh*t her pants that
a) this type of stuff existed in the ROK
b) they would do it in front of elders and a foreigner
when i taught kids, they told me that in middle and high school it wasn't completley uncommon, especially in all girl schools. |

I got a good one:
I'm on an intercity bus at night. Only about 5 people on the bus. I'm sitting at the back. In the seat across/ahead of me there's a young couple, maybe around 15 yr olds. It's dark and I can't see too well, but I can hear them smooching and pillow talking. Then one of em' starts what looks like some finger banging and the other starts moaning pretty audibly. No one else can hear them because they're sitting near the front, and I think the couple doesn't realize that I'm sitting right behind them. The bus stops and they get off. Only then do I realize they are two girls. Holy highschool rugmunchers batman!!! |

Guess I have never thought of looking at someone's hands as a clue to their gender and/or sexual orientation. |
My point was that if you didn't see her unusually tiny and feminine hands you could've easily thought she was a Korean man who goes for the androgynous style popular here. There was nothing unusual about her clothing or hairstyle except that she was the wrong gender for it in the Korean context. |

Hey Dirty Sanchez your "good one" sounded like a good description of gay love.
I am concerned though about where you were sitting. You were in the back of the bus behind them. Then you go on and say the girls were in the front and you were off to the side.
Where exactly were you? |

i'm from canada but our family is from Korea, well, here's a story: once a long time ago when i was in juniour high and getting interested in sex and other things our grandmother from korea came to live with us. i asked her a few questions about things that happened in Korea including whether Korea had any homosexuals. I was just 11 or 12 and i didnn't know anything about homosexuals. anyway my then 68 year old Korean grandmother said that yes indeed Korea had homosexuals and they they were quote "gross" (¡) it's funny how this old woman who would be in her 80's now if she was still alive conceded that homosexuals existed in Korea when twenty somethings say they don't.
some more interesting things I heard her say: when we visited Korea once back in the early nineties I wanted to go to Itaewon, the grandmother said "why do you want to go to Itaewon? it's full of (N bomb)" another time I acted really childishly and she explained that "it was because I live with the savages (actual quote - ) in Canada" that i acted that way.
she said if I married a black woman she would not visit me any more, then i said I was going to marry an indian woman, she was amazed that i thought Indian women were somehow better than blacks (she thought they were all the same)
but interestingly, for a real country hick woman who grew up in the time of Japanese occupation, she had no interest in japanese at all. i remember asking her if there were any Japanese in her smalll Korean town, she replied that yes there were a lot. then i asked her if she hated japanese and she replied "koreans and japanese are the same why should I hate them???" (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
it's my korean grandmother!!!!!!!! |

Wow, this is a Choice thread. Should be the best.
I like your first hand story about your grandmother.
Also, thought that story about the couple on the bus pretty neat, too. |

dudes..try walking into any lesbian bar in hongdae. I remember my first time there and made my head turn for sure. In korea it is very popular among lesbian couples for them to take the butch/femme roles. Its kinda tough being a somewhat butchy girl as korean butches get pretty territorial over thier femmes. On a couple of occasion I have been involved in fights, drinks being thrown dissapproving glances. |

One of my female Korean friends had a high-school friend who turned out to be lesbian. She tried to sever all ties with her friend, but her
friend persisted. Her friend managed to mend the bridges somewhat, and invited my friend to come out with her and meet her girlfriend.
They went to a lesbian bar, and my friend got hit on (not aggressively, but a girl expressed interest in her). My friend ran (did not walk,
did not pass "Go," did not collect $200, but R~A~N~ ) from the bar. Despite this incident, their friendship managed to survive.
My understanding is that if homosexuals are willing to forgo sexual intimacy, then they can easily blend in with Korean society, since it's so common for people to hold hands with or put their arms around their friends. However, that must be a tough, and ultimately lonely, road to travel. |
