So, if you've got the E-2 and want to travel in and out of the country, do you need a re-entry/multiple re-entry visa? |

Yes, you do. You can go to immigration during the week if your work doesn't get in the way... I'm not sure how much it costs for a multiple entry... I think I've heard 50,000.
If you are only leaving the country once or if you work during immigration's hours, you can get a re-entry visa at the airport's immigration office for 30,000. Just walk in the front door for departures and walk straight to the back wall... it's down one of the hallways. |

Good point... look on your visa first.
On the third line the visa should state the status (E-2), period of sojourn, and entries (S = single, M = multiple). If it says M, smooth sailing. |

And how long does the original entry visa last? |

I'm not American - I'm Canadian - so the aforementioned benefit of automatic re-entry for Americans will not apply to me. However, should Manifest Destiny make a re-appearance on the North American stage I'll have my visa ammended accordingly.
I looked at the original visa, which was a tourist visa, and there is an 'M' at the end, but as a Canadian I get six months for every tourist visa, so it would be automatic that I could come and go as a tourist, or so I would think.
As I work for a public school board, I was able to change my tourist visa in the country, so I don't know if any special measures will extend to my re-entry status.
Anyway, I'll play it safe and get the re-entry when and if the opportunity for travel presents itself definitely.
Thanks |

I thought you said you had an E-2. If you have an E-2, that's what you need to be looking at. If you only have a tourist visa, then you have nothing to worry about. As soon as you return, you will automatically be granted a new tourist visa -- no re-entry permit necessary. |

I was able to come in on a Tourist Visa and change that as I work for the public schoo system; not a bad deal as it saves you the trip to Japan.
I'll be going to Immi and getting the re-entry on the E-2 when the need arises. |
