I think I need to invest in one of these... I have had a cassette recorder for forever and a day but it's starting to get funky in the buttons, I suppose I could take it apart and clean it... but a nice, new light and versatile MP3 recorder/player would be keen... any suggestions?

Look into iAudio players, they are pretty good. The iRiver H10 is a very decent player and is very comparable to the iPod, of which I am not an advocate.

There are two players that are outstanding, in my opinion and both are of the same line. The Creative Zen Vision:M and the Creative Zen Microphoto are outstanding players.

The Zen Vision:M is a great looking player with idv3 and idv2 compatibility (select your song by genre, artist, etc), and has 30gb of storage space. The only downside is that it has an internal battery, but so does the iPod and people like it, so that isn't really an issue. This player is available in Korea for 398,000 won.

The Zen Microphoto is the same as the Vision:M, but it is smaller and runs on 8gb or storage space. It has a photo viewer and comes in like 8 colors. It also has an external detachable battery, so there is no threat of it becoming a paper weight once the battery dies (unlike other players, namely the iPod).

Find product descriptions for the Creative lines here

The above suggestions are only for if you are looking into a player that is mainly for playing music. If you are looking for a player that can handle video, photos, text viewers, recording, and pretty much any other multimedia need that you may have, then you are looking for a PMP. Recommendations on some excellent PMPs can be found here

I've had iaudio recommended to me by both Samsung and Iriver engineers...

I love my ipod but if you want something that'll record you might want to try another brand.

I'd go with iRiver. Good sound, good features, good A/S.

if you can find one try for the iriver h300 series, abit bigger than the newer mp3 players and not as pretty (actually quite ugly but it grows on you) but they are good players had mine for a year and half no problems so far and i use it every day at the gym (which is not good for hard drive based mp3s).

As far as i am aware they have stopped making them but they are still around.

specs

20/40gb
colour screen (amazing quality)
supports most codex (no m4u)
video (i have about 8 DVDs 20 tv shows and about 3000 mp3s)
jpeg
txt
radio fm
comes with an internal and external mic
internal battery and external battery pack (takes 4 AA)
supports nearlly every language
firmware upgrade (new upgrades take ages to come out)
plus a bunch of extras

well you can probably tell i like mine but the iaudio is good too

The H300 and PMC series are both PMP lines, not mp3 players. If the OP is just looking to play music, then PMPs are definitely overkill in the range of options and price. I wouldn't recommend either of those PMP players, btw. If a PMP is what is wanted, first look into the Archos AV700 (the only player that supports video recording funtions), followed by the Creative Zen Vision:M, Cowon A2, iStation i2 or iStation v43 (biggest screen in the industry with 7"0), and the Mobinote DVXPOD-7010. All of these players should be considered before ever considering the H300 or PMC players from iRiver.

If you really want to go with iRiver mp3 players, take a look into the U10 (thumbthing), which is an exceptional player but only has a capacity of 1gb, for now. The H10, as previously stated, is also a pretty good player and just as good, of not better than the iPod. It comes in 5gb-20gb versions.

OP, do you want strictly an MP3 player or something that can handle video and a lot of other things too? What is your price range? If you want only an MP3 player, do you want a RAM player (no moving parts but smaller capacity), or a harddrive player (breaks more easily but has a MUCH larger capacity)? If you want a PMP, do you want recording capabilities?

The thing is that with the MP3 and PMP selection being so huge, it is hard to really help you until these questions are answered.

i have the iriver H340 and i love it.
good sound, picture viewer, can watch videos, tons of space (40 gig), voice recorder.
it's a little clunky, but i like something i can store all my music on plus extras.

IRiver also probably has the best customer service that I have seen in Korea.

I can vouch personally for the iRiver after sales service. The on/off button on mine broke 8 months into daily use of it. I took it to the place in Yangjae and was somewhat bewildered when they told me to return within the hour. I was expecting to say goodbye to it for week or something. 45 mins later I was back and they'd replaced the button for nowt. Very reassuring.

I got the iStation V43 just last week. It's pretty awesome. So many functions. Expensive at around 600,000 for the 30gig GPS model but it does so much, and so well, that the 600,000 starts to look cheap. Well, reasonable!!!

Did you buy it as a result of reading about it here or "other" message boards? I swear that I personally made the launch of the v43 by iStation a success by my constant reviews of that particular PMP! Anyways, I love the v43, but I am also keeping my eye on the Creative Zen Vision lines which are showing A LOT of promise.

Well, it was a question of fitting my needs.

I found I needed an MP3 player and a portable hard drive. I also felt the need for GPS as my wife and I have terrible sense of direction and always end up lost when driving in Seoul/Korea.

I looked at MP3 players. I looked at Portable HDD's. I looked at GPS units. Then I remembered about PMP's from a discussion on here a while back. Quick bit of research and ....hey presto! The V43 solves all my needs. And then some!

The GPS works very well. We have tested it out on a couple of complex trips in Seoul and it never fails to direct us right to the building we want to go to. Unfortunately, the V43 is still very focused on the Korean market so you can't load maps of any other countries onto it yet. Also, the maps can only be in hangeul. So my wife programs it. I could probably do it but it would be a tedious job working it all out. She does it in 2 minutes.

Video player, MP3 player, GPS, PDA, hard drive space......That's all I need........for now!

Where did you review it? It seems to have a bit of a cult following already. I'm registered on http://www.v43mania.com/ . Seems iStation is a bit slow to export as Americans etc can't seem to get hold of them easily.

What's the Creative Zen Vision line got going for it?

I was dissapointed that the V43 can't work as a VCR when connected to a TV or VCR. No video-in conversion. The Cowon A2 can however.
