Are you guys and Dave doing it yourselves? I just figured you had some tech guys working on it.

Well, there are some "tech guys" but Dave is pretty hands on and does all the checking and rechecking himself.

Personally, I don't have much to do with it. But I talked to Dave today and so I thought I would pass on the info in case people were still getting the error, and were wondering what was up.

I was just thinking, if this is true, what are we going to do. I mean we will always have the "Americans are insuffrably arrogant pricks" and the "Canadians are insecure morons" to keep us going, but no phpBB to take out our frustrations on...

now there's no cover page access on the top: we have to click on the leftside list

are we gonna moan about that too?

i just come here less often because of the error. maybe that's what Dave wants.

When I get a reply message in my email, I give up trying to check in after about 15-20 error messages. Just not worth my time. I definitely spend a lot less time on the board because of this.

But there is the possibility that our absence is not a problem.

Has Dave been out of the country for the past couple months? These problems should never take this long to solve. I doubt it's all that complicated. I know, I was in the industry. Still, it's good to know things will change and if that is true, thanks.

Don't forget, Dave is a one-man industry with a lot of problems to solve and a lot of fires to put out. I didn't ask him, but I'm not sure how long he's been aware of the problem.

Also, if you were in the industry, you can appreciate how complicated the site is, with a new version of python on the server, and all its legacy cgi scripts and (relatively) modern php scripts. It's not like turing on a new tv - we want to make sure nothing breaks.

Having been in business for myself, I know that the time comes when you have to part with the money to hire employees. This place is far beyond the management of the Wizard of Oz, behind the curtain, with a handful of volunteer munchkins doing the front work.

Well, well.............

I started this thread ages ago and have been PATIENT. Now I feel I am turning into A PATIENT. So if Dave can't fix me, maybe we should just do as I originally suggested, inform the sponsors of the level of disatisfaction..........

So I will begin to inform customers through their contact email, in a truthful manner, of the troubles people have utilizing this site. I am sure sponsors will not appreciate knowing that their "audience" is disatified and not too happy. Because of course this affects how ads are viewed, how ads are perceived etc.....

The email for copying purposes appears below;

Dear _______________,

I have been a user of Dave's ESL Cafe for ---- years. Recently, the website has been at times very frustrating for me, the user. An error message appears and stops one from obtaining a web page or also, an error message occurs and the user (me) loses a post or info. written.

I am writing to inform you about my own level of dissatisfaction with Dave's ESL Cafe. I have requested the website repeatedly over the past two month, to fix the problem and have waited patiently. I can wait no more and also want to inform you, a paying subscriber/advertiser about this problem.

Thanking you for your attention to this matter. I do hope Dave's ESL Cafe at the prompting of advertisers will correct the problem promply. If not, I do believe the website will suffer a serious loss of confidence and vistors.

Yours,

_____________

DD, I appreciate what you are trying to do. I get that same error all the time. But maybe your message would be better if you could give an option for the masses. *grin* Maybe there - don't ask me where - is a forum that actually works, is maintained and moderated more frequently? That might start an exodus, though. People do vote with their feet, you know.

Between logging on the read the last posting, and writing this, 15 Critical error messages.

I had a message in my inbox of my email saying there was a response to the "critical error" thread, and then got a bunch of critical error messages-I really thought maybe someone was pulling a joke! Confused
