I never bothered with the F-2 until a year ago. I must go renew it 12/31/2007.
You must renew them.
I was also told I could have any job except a prostitute, exotic dancer or a bartender.
I guess being a bar tender is illegal here.....???? |
F2s must be renewed. F5s dont. |

F5's can open businesses and do anything a Korean can, except vote and go to the army. It is a good idea to get this visa if you can. |

If you get married to a Korean...can you go directly from an E2 to an F5? |

No. You go from E2 to F2-1 to F5. |

They seem picky about the F5 visa people. They actually do look at the money aspect. I would apply as soon as possible in case they change the requirements and include some form of language qualification. I was surprised they didn't have it yet. |

They will. The flood gates have been opened and lots of us slipped through but they will clamp down on the requirements sooner or later, and Im betting on sooner. Its just too primo a visa to have. Basically it is like citizenship without the voting (who cares I never vote) and military service (YAY!) |

Does the F-5 give you a citizen id number of any kind? Say you want to open a business, thus getting a business license, I would suspect the Dong office would have no idea how to do it with an ARC. Anyone have any kind of experience with all of this?
How long did it take Seoul immigration office people to go through the F-5 process from start to finish? |

I just got back last night from Canada and the immigration people at the airport in inchon (the office) knew about the F5 visa but the people working at the immigration booths didn't know what it was.
---BTW...I went through the korean line okay and to leave korea I didn't have to pay anything (just like a korean). |

Now, this is more like it. Good stuff.
The last time we entered Incheon I did a funny thing. I said to the people, "We are one family, so we stay together. But look, we are not Korean, and yet, we are not Western. What line do we take?"
So they put us through the flight attendant and pilots' line. HAHAHA |

I think the money issue is just for men.
When they suggested that we got the F-2 after we were married, I questioned the reasoning behind it (cos they also wanted me to get my working E-7 visa, too).. and they said that after five years, I could just apply for the F-5 and become a permanent resident... the implication, according to my husband, is that after 5 years, they would automatically give me the F-5 if I should want it. |

Theres no implication. You can apply, which is correct, but you arent guaanteed an F5. And its not 5 years anymoe, its around 2 or 3. |

Yes I know it's 2 now... I meant when I first applied for the F2 4 years ago, they told us that I could change from the F2 to the F5 after 5 years of continous stay.
In any case, I stand by what I said about the financial thing being just for men - they never asked us for any of that when I applied for my F2. Not the first one or the second or the third... just needed proof that we were married... and it was given to me, on the very same day! In fact, the last F2 I got took 5 mins. The officer checked all our documents and stamped my passport right away and gave me 2 years, on the ground that I was 6 months pregnant! |

My ARC card worked when I wanted to open a business. They issue you a business license which has its own number. The problem was the tax issues. The tax office didn't know what to do..so in the end I just put it in my wifes name.

Mine took like almost 3 months in Suwon, but I don't know how long it will be in Seoul. I heard it was much faster there. |
