Hi--
I'm 39 years old and thinking about returning to either Korea or Japan in the near future. I'd just like to hear about people who have had no problems getting a job because of their age and also the bad stories about not getting hired because of age in either country. Thanks
PS--I know 39 is not that old, but I know that to the Koreans I may as well be 80 or 90!!! |

You have better chances in Korea, cause even though it "seems" more ageist than Japan, the job market is badly in need of teachers. Can't really say the same for Japan outside of Nova and Geos (whom if you read in the Japanese forum, a lot of people are being washed out of even those interviews, which is scary). |

| I know it is at least possible to get jobs here as an over-40 person. At my last job, we had a guy who was like 45. Also, I know of several others who are 40-50 and even one who was pushing 60! |

I haven't been 39 for a while, so I don't really know how the job market treats people in that age bracket. I can only speak for those 'of a certain age'. (I always liked that phrase...a gentleman/lady of a certain age)...anyway...
It's my experience here since '94 that the older I get the more difficult it is to get a prospective employer to read my resume. I have a teaching certificate with eons of experience, which should give me a leg up on most positions. That is not the case in Korea.
Consider public school jobs. The demand here is large and there is some openness to hire people regardless of age. |
