Do you think martial arts are useful for self defense (I've heard mixed opinions)? When I have kids, I want them to be able to defend themselves. I also think it's a good way to boost self-confidence.

What martial art do you think is most useful for self defense?

When is the ideal age to begin learning martial arts?

defend themselves??? Smile

I don't agree with your reason for sending them, but I do agree it's a great thing for children. I heard once anywhere over 4 is good for starting (I wish I could remember where). For self defence... Maybe Judo, most fights start with the combattents up close (robberies, bar fights, etc), so Tae Kwon Do and JiJitsu aren't as useful.

(I've been thinking of putting phpBB:error up on a punching bag and going at it) Smile

Ok- to clarify. I don't want bigger kids stealing my kid's lunch money, you know? Anyway, I was petrified of some older girls when I was in middle school. If I had known how to defend myself, I would've felt better about it.

I think that it is good for kids to know how to defend themselves, but I am even more in favour of martial arts as a way to help kids get fit.
In this day and age, kids spend too much time on their arse and not exercising.

Grappling sports like wrestling and jiu-jitsu are great for kids as young as 4. They have that instinct to go roll around with each other anyway, you might as well let them burn it off and do it constructively.

the best would be boxing! no question!
in korea most hakwan taekwondo schools are just a way to make money
all they do is exercising! kicking and punching all hour!
TEAK WON DO! TEAK WON DO! TEAK WON DO!
they do this for 10 years! they get into a fight what they gonna do?
throw a punch and say TEAK WON DO?
trust me.. you have a son!? go with boxing! he will learn how to protect from himself from a hit! and be able to strike fast and move quick!
go with boxing!

if you want martial arts! kick boxing! or aikido! in korean they call it HAPKIDO!
but again! BOXING!!

I think its a great idea to start sending your children to martial arts training, even at an early age. But you should ask yourself why? If its for self-defense, I believe any youngster under 10 or so will lack the physical ability to apply what they learn, even at the black belt levels. But martial arts is much more than that. It teaches obedience, respect, team work, as well as more physical elements like routines, conditioning, training for tests, accomplishment, etc.. All good things for children, and why TaeKwonDo is so popular with children in Korea.

To answer your questions, Hapkido and Judo are the best self-defense martial arts. Kick-boxing as well, but not for children.

I'd say boxing and kickboxing are a little on the technical as well as dangerous side for anyone less than, say, 12 or 13, but that's just my two cents. The nice thing about wrestling and grappling is 1) as anyone who has seen little boys knows, they do it anyway and 2) there's really only so much damage you can do if you don't know submissions, which I wouldn't recommend for the age group you're describing anyway.

Get them in a class, teach them some reversals and some guards (full, half, butterfly) and by the time they master them they'll be old enough for some of this other stuff. All IMHO, of course.

I suggest enrolling them in a beginner class shortly after conception. They can watch videos of sperm kicking the crap out of each other just to get layed...

For a lot of us it's a way of life and as it's our only hobby we'd like for our kids (or nephews in my case) to get into it so we can share something.

I'd love to take my boys hiking, or fishing, or show them how to play guitar but I can't. This is what I know and this is what I do, so I'd love it if they got started early so we could share it.
